Asslamo Allaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,

Recall the two rules:

  1. Muadaf/Mudaf-Ileh is a two word phrase in Arabic where the first word has single “Damma” (no “Al” and no “Tanween” and the second word is always Majroor
  2. When the vocative particle “Yaa” يا is used the word immediately afterwards only has a single “Damma” i.e. one of the Dammas drops out!

Lesson 5:

Remember that Dr Abdur-Raheem doesn't want to have questions analysed!

سَعِيدٌ: أَكِتَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ هَـٰذَا؟

Saeed: Is book of Muhammad, this? OR Is this book of Muhammad?

يَاسِرٌ: لاَ، هَـٰذَا كِتَابُ حَامِدٍ.

Yasir: No, This is book of Hamid.

  1.  is Mubatada هَـٰذَا
  2.    is Khabar and also Mudaf  كِتَابُ
  3.    is Mudaf-Ilehحَامِدٍ
  4.  i.e. the whole of two words "togther" is not Khabar كِتَابُ حَامِدٍ

سَعِيدٌ: أيْنَ كِتَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ؟

Saeed: Where is book of Muhammad?

يَاسِرٌ: هُوَ عَلَىٰ الْمَكْتَبِ هُنَاكَ.

Yasir: It is on the table, there.

  1.  is Mubatada هُوَ
  2.    is Harf-Jaar or preposition  عَلَىٰ
  3.    is Ism-Majroorالْمَكْتَبِ
  4.  i.e. the whole of two words "togther"are Khabar عَلَىٰ الْمَكْتَبِ
  5. is Zarf. Its a word which denotes a position of place e.g.here, there or time هُنَاكَ

سَعِيدٌ: أَيْنَ دَفْتَرُ عَمَّارٍ؟

Saeed: Where is exercise book of Ammar?

يَاسِرٌ: هُوَ عَلَىٰ مَكْتَبِ الْمُدَرِّسِ.

Yasir: It is on the table of the teacher. watch the word مَكْتَبِ

  1.  is Mubatada هُوَ
  2.    is Harf-Jaar or preposition  عَلَىٰ
  3.    is Ism-Majroor and it is also Mudafالْمَكْتَبِ
  4.  is Mudaf-Ilehالْمُدَرِّسِ

سَعِيدٌ: قَلَمُ مَنْ هَـٰذَا؟

Saeed: Who's pen is this?

عَلِيٌّ: هَذَا قَلَمُ الْمُدَرِّسِ.

Ali: This is the pen of the teacher.

سَعِيدٌ: أَيْنَ حَقِيبَةُ الْمُدَرِّسِ؟

Saeed: Where is the bag of the teacher?

عَلِيٌّ: هِيَ تَحْتَ الْمَكْتَبِ.

Ali: It is under the table.

is Zarf and very often the Zarf is followed by Mudaf-Ileh. !تَحْتَ

Sometimes Zarf comes alone and sometimes it has a Mudaf-Ileh afterwards

Exercise 1:

Write down the answer to the following questions from the Lesson.

أيْنَ كِتَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ؟

أَيْنَ دَفْتَرُ عَمَّارٍ؟

أَيْنَ حَقِيبَةُ الْمُدَرِّسِ؟

Exercise 2:

Rewrite the words as Mudaf/Mudaf-Ileh combination with the correct vowel on the last letter and also translate into English

قلمٌ، حامدٌ

دكانٌ، تاجرٌ

سريرٌ، خالدٌ

اسمٌ، الولدُ

مفتاحٌ، السيارةُ

بيتٌ، الطبِيبُ

دفترٌ، سعيدٌ

قلمٌ، المهندسُ

Asslamo Allaikum,

Please give Mushwara and I will do as advised. Technically next Sunday (when I put the lessons up) will be Taraweeh. I can carry on during Ramadhan or STOP, its upto people.

Jazakullah Khairun

السلام علیکم ورحمة الله وبركاته

It took me several hours to understand why some of the words are not خبر but I'm still not sure if I understood correctly. Please check my explanations and correct me if I'm wrong.

يَاسِرٌ: لاَ، هَـٰذَا كِتَابُ حَامِدٍ

Only كتاب is khabar. حامد is not khabar because it is majroor.

يَاسِرٌ: هُوَ عَلَىٰ الْمَكْتَبِ هُنَاكَ

على المكتب is khabar. Khabar is always marfoo but in this case مكتب has become majroor because of حرف جر.

يَاسِرٌ: هُوَ عَلَىٰ مَكْتَبِ الْمُدَرِّسِ

على المكتب is khabar. Khabar is always marfoo but in this case مكتب has become majroor because of حرف جر.
المدرس is not khabar because it is majroor. (but it has become majroor coz of mudaf)

عَلِيٌّ: هَذَا قَلَمُ الْمُدَرِّسِ

قلم is khabar. المدرس is not khabar because it is majroor.

عَلِيٌّ: هِيَ تَحْتَ الْمَكْتَبِ

This one is very confusing.
تحت is khabar. المکتب is not khabar because it is majroor.

It would be better to say “majrūr due to being muḍāf ilayh” to be more specific. The example with تحت المكتب is similar to those with على المكتب. The two words together can be considered to be khabar while على is a ḥarf al-jarr and تحت is a ẓarf and muḍāf with the following word being muḍāf ilayh.
