35. A Man's Being Late For Part Of The Prayer

129. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله informed us, that when Sayyiduna 'Abdullaah Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما missed something of the prayer with the Imaam in which he [the Imaam] recited aloud, then, after he [the Imaam] concluded, Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما would stand up and individually recite in those [rak'aat] he had to make up."

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We adhere to this, for he is making up the earlier part of his prayer; that is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allaah have mercy on him."

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "We adhere to this; and he should prostrate with them but not count it [the rak'ah as having been performed]. That is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allaah have mercy on him."

131. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله informed us that when Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما found the Imam had prayed part of the prayer, he would pray with him what he caught of the prayer, standing if he stood and sitting if he sat, until the Imam concluded his prayer, not doing anything different [from the Imam] in any part of the prayer."

Imam Muhammad رحمه الله said: "Whoever [only] does the two prostrations with the Imam, they are not counted. After the Imam concludes, he must pray a whole rak'ah with its two prostrations; that is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allaah have mercy on him."

36. A Man's Reciting More Than One Surah In One Rak'ah Of The Obligatory Prayer

134. Imam Malik رحمه الله informed us: "Naafi' رحمه الله informed us that when Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما prayed alone, he would recite in all four [rak'aat] of Dhuhr and 'Asr, in each rak'ah, the Opening [Fatihah] of the Book and a surah from the Qur'aan; he would sometimes recite two of three suwar in the obligatory prayer, in one rak'ah. Similarly, he would recite in the first two rak'atayn of Maghrib, the Umm al-Qur'aan and a surah in each of the two."

Imam Muhammad رحمة اللہ علیه said: "The Sunnah is to recite in the first two rak'ahs of the obligatory prayer the Opening [Fatihah] of the Book and a surah, and in the last two just the Opening [Fatihah] of the Book. If you do not recite in the [last two] it will suffice you, and if you say 'Subhan Allaah', it will suffice you. That is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa, may Allaah have mercy on him."
