Imam Malik (رحمة اللہ علیه) said, "A report reached us that the caller to prayer [mu'adhdhin] came to Sayyiduna 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) to inform him of the dawn prayer and found him sleeping. The caller to prayer said, 'Prayer is better than sleep.' So Sayyiduna 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) ordered him to include this in the call for the dawn (Fajr) prayer."

92. Imam Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan (رحمه الله) said: "'As-salaatu Kharum-minan-nawm - [Prayer is better than sleep]'; the place for this is in the call at dawn (Fajr), after finishing the call. It is not necessary to add to the call anything that is not part of it."

93. Imam Malik (رحمة اللہ علیه) informed us: "'Alaa' Ibn 'Abdur Rahmaan Ibn Ya'qoob (رحمة اللہ علیه) informed us from his father (رحمة اللہ علیه), that he heard Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (رضي الله عنه) say, 'The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, "When the prayer is announced for the second time [the iqaama], do not come to it in a rush; come to it calmly. Then pray what you catch, and complete what you miss; so long as anyone intends prayer, he is in prayer."'"

95. Imam Malik (رحمة اللہ علیه) informed us: "Sumayy (رحمة اللہ علیه) informed us that he heard Abu Bakr, meaning Ibn 'Abdur Rahman (رحمة اللہ علیه) say, 'Whoever goes out in the morning or the evening to the Masjid (Mosque), not intending other than that, to learn good or to teach it, then returns to the house he departed from, is like one who strives in Jihad in the way of Allaah (سبحانه و تعالى), and returns with booty.'"

31. A Man's Praying Individually When The Caller To Prayer [Mu'adhdhin] Has Started The Second Call To The Prayer [Iqaama]

96. Imam Malik (رحمة اللہ علیه) informed us: "Shareek Ibn 'Abdullah Ibn Abi Numayr (رحمة اللہ علیه) informed that Abu Salamah Ibn 'Abdur Rahman Ibn 'Auf (رضي الله عنهما), said, 'Some people heard the second call to prayer and stood up to do individual prayers, so the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came out to them and said, 'Are there two prayers at the same time?''"

Imam Muhammad (رحمة اللہ علیه) said: "When the iqaamah is announced, it is disliked for a man to pray a non-obligatory prayer, the only exception being the two rak'aat of Fajr, for there is no harm in a man's praying them even though the mu'adhdhin has started the iqaamah, on the contrary, he should do so. That is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa (رحمة اللہ علیه)."

98. Imam Malik (رحمة اللہ علیه) informed us: "Abu Suhayl Ibn Malik (رحمة اللہ علیه) and Abu'n-Nadr (رحمة اللہ علیه), the mawla of 'Umar Ibn 'Ubaydullah (رحمة اللہ علیه), informed us from Malik Ibn Abi 'Aamir al-Ansari (رحمة اللہ علیه), that Sayyiduna 'Uthman Ibn 'Affan (رضي الله عنه) would say in his khutbah, when the iqaamah for the prayer had been called, 'So level the rows, and place your shoulders together, for the levelling of the rows is essential to the perfection of prayer.'

Then he would not say Allaahu Akbar until certain men, to whom he had entrusted the straightening of the rows, came to him and told him that they were straight; only then would he say Allaahu Akbar."

Imam Muhammad (رحمه الله) said: "When the caller to prayer [mu'adhdhin] has said Hayya 'alal-falaah, the people ought to stand to pray, form rows, straighten the rows and place their shoulders together. Then, when the mu'adhdhin has said Wad qaamatis-salaah, the Imam should say Allaahu Akbar. That is the verdict of Imam Abu Hanifa (رحمه الله)."
