139. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us that Hammaad said, I asked Ibrahim about a man praying in the eastern side of the mosque and a woman praying in the western side and he disapproved of that unless between them there was something that amounted to the rear part of the camel saddle.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this, when they are in the same prayer praying with a single imam."

140. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammaad from Ibrahim that al-Aswad ibn Yazid asked A'ishah رضى الله عنها the Mother of the Mu'minum, about what interrupts the prayer [and invalidates it by passing in front of it] and she said, 'Do you not claim, people of Iraq, that donkeys, dogs, women and cats interrupt the prayer, and so you couple us [women] with them [animals]? Avert what you can, because nothing interrupts the prayer.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to the verdict of A'ishah رضى الله عنها ans it is the verdict of Abu Hanifa."

By people of Iraq, it is as if by that she indicated that which the people of Iraq narrated from Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه and others concerning other narrations.

141. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammad from Ibrahim that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه said, 'The ugliest vice is any discourse after the prayer of 'Isha except for in prayer or recitation of Quran.'"

44. NOSEBLEEDS DURING THE PRAYER AND BREAKING WIND

142. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us saying, 'Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr narrated to us from Ma'bad ibn Subayh that a man of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (saw) prayed behind Uthman ibn Affaan رضي الله عنه. The man broke wind and so left the prayer. He did not speak until he had done wudu and then returned saying, "and they do not knowingly persist in what they were doing" (Surah Al Imran: 135). So he calculated what he prayed and prayed what remained.'"

143. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us that Ibrahim said, 'That suffices him, but I prefer him to start again from the beginning.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to the verdict of Ibrahim. That is sufficient for him, but if he talks and begins it again that is better. That is the verdict of Abu Hanifa."

144. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammaad that Ibrahim said concerning a man who has a nosebleed during the prayer or who breaks wind, 'Let him leave without speaking except for remembrance of Allah, then do wudhu and return to his place and make up what remains of his prayer reckoning whatever he has already prayed. However, if he talks then let him start from the beginning.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this. To speak and then start from the beginning is better, and that is the verdict of Abu Hanifa."

45. WHAT OF THE PRAYER IS REPEATED AND WHAT OF THAT IS DISAPPROVED

145. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us that Hammad said, 'I asked Ibrahim about prayer before Maghrib and he forbade me to do it. He said, "The Prophet (saw), Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه and Umar رضي الله عنه did not pray it"'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this. When the sun sets there is to be no prayer over the dead nor anything else before the prayer of Maghrib, and that is the verdict of Abu Hanifa"

146. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammad that Ibrahim said, 'If the blood and the urine and other things are the size of a dirham then repeat your prayer. If it is less than the size of a dirham then conclude your prayer.'"

And Muhammad said, "The prayer is valid until the point when that is larger than the size of a big mithqal dirham at which point one's prayer is not valid, and that is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him."

147. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us saying, 'Ali ibn al-Aqmar narrated to us that the Prophet (saw) passed by a man who had draped his garment over his head and shoulders allowing the rest of it trail down over his body during the prayer and so he folded it up for him'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this. Draping one's garment loosely over the head and shoulders and over the shirt or anything else is disapproved because it resembles the actions of the People of the Book, and that is the verdict of Abu Hanifa."

148. Muhammad said, "Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr narrated to us from Qaza'ah from Abu Said al-Khudri رضي الله عنه that the Prophet (saw) said, 'There is to be no prayer after the morning prayer until the sun has risen, nor is there to be any prayer after the Asr prayer until the sun has set. Nor are these two days to be fasted: al-Fitr and al-Adha. Nor should one make journeys except to three mosques: the sacred mosque [in Makkah], my mosque and al-Aqsa mosque. A woman must not travel except in the company of a mahram [male relative whom she is unable to marry in any circumstances].'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to all of this, and a woman ought not to travel except in the company of her husband or with a male relative [whom she is unable to marry in any circumstances], and that is the verdict of Abu Hanifa."

149. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifah informed us from Hammad that Ibrahim disapproved of cracking the joints of the fingers in the prayer or of casting the large outer garment over the shoulders, or placing the hands on the flanks, or burying the larger pebbles, or sitting back with the buttocks on the ground and setting the thighs erect while laying one's arms along the ground (iq'a), or fiddling with one's beard."

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this because it is trifling with the prayer which distracts one from it, and that is the verdict of Abu Hanifah, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him."

150. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifah informed us from Hammad from Ibrahim, "Sadl [draping the garment over the head and shoulders allowing the rest of it to trail down over the body] is disapproved in the prayer; do not emulate the Jews."

151. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammad from Ibrahim that Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه led his companions in Maghrib without reciting any of the Quran in the whole time until he finished. His companions said to him, 'What prevented you from reciting, Amir al-Mu'minin?' He said, 'Did I not do that? I was equipping an army to go from Madinah to Sham and I continued to ride with it stage by stage until it reached Sham,' and so he and his companions repeated the prayer."

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this and it is the verdict of Abu Hanifa."

152. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us saying, 'Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr narrated to us from Abu Ghadiyah that Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه used to beat people for praying after Asr.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this. We do not think that anyone should pray supererogatory prayers after Asr under any circumstances. That is the verdict of Abu Hanifa."

153. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammad that Ibrahim said, 'If you join people in prayer without intending the same prayer as they are doing then it is not valid for you. If the imam intends one prayer and those behind him intend another it is valid for him but not for them.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this and it is the verdict of Abu Hanifa."
