85. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us, 'Hammad narrated to us that Ibrahim said, "Do not do anything extra in the last two rak'ahs over and above the Fatihah of the book."'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this and that is the verdict of Abu Hanifa."

86. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us saying , 'Abul Hasan Musa ibn Abi Aisha narrated to us from Abdullah ibn Shaddad ibn al-Had that Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari رضي الله عنه said, "The Messenger of Allah (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam) prayed with a man behind him reciting, so a man from the Companions of the Prophet (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam) began to forbid him to recite during the prayer. So he said, 'Do you forbid me to recite behind the Prophet (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam)?' And they quarrelled until that was mentioned to the Prophet (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam). The Prophet (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam) said, 'Whoever prays behind an Imam, the Imam's recitation is his recitation.'"'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this and it is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him."

88. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammad that Ibrahim said concerning when the Imam makes a mistake in an Ayah, 'Let him recite the Ayah after that, but if he does not do that then let him recite another Surah, and if he does not do that then let him bow in Ruku if he had already recited three Ayah or something like that. If he does not do [any of that] then prompt him, but he has done wrong.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this and it is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him."

29. STRAIGHTENING THE ROWS AND THE MERIT OF THE FIRST ROW

89. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammad that Ibrahim used to say, Make your rows straight, and make you shoulders level. Press closely together or shaytan will enter in the gaps between you like lambs of small black Yemeni sheep or goats. Allah and his angels send blessings on those who straighte the rows.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this. A row is ought not to be left with a gap in it without them rectifiying it. That is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, May Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him."

90. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us that Hammad said, 'I asked Ibrahim wether the first row has any merit over the second and he said, 'They (The Sahaba) only used to say ,'Do not atand in the row - meaning the second - until the first is complete'"'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this. When the first row is complete, one ought not to try and crowd into it because that is the cause of annoyance [to others], and to stand in the second row is better than the first."

30. A MAN LEADING A GROUP OF PEOPLE OR TWO MEN IN PRAYER

91. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammad that Ibrahim said, 'The best read of a people in the book of Allah should lead the people in prayer, and if they are equal in recitation then the earliest of them in emigration. If they are equal in terms of emigration then the oldest of of them.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this. It was only said, 'The best read of a people in the Book of Allah, 'Because in that epoch the best read in the Quran was also the most knowledgeable of the fiqh of the deen. In this time if they are like that then the best read should lead them in prayer. However, if someone is more knowledgeable than him in fiqh than him and more knowledgeable of the sunnah of the prayer and he reads as well as he does, then the one who is more knowledgeable of the fiqh and more knowledgeable of the of the sunnah of the prayer has more right to lead. That is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him."

92. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us saying, 'Hammaad narrated to us that Ibrahim said, "There is no harm in a nomadic Arab leading them in prayer, or a slave or a person born out of wed lock, if he reads Quran"'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this ifhe is knowledgable in fiqh and knowledgable of the business of prayer, and that is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him."

93. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammaad that Ibrahim said concerning two men one of whom leads his fellow in prayer, 'The imam stands on the left side.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this and it is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him, that the person being lead in prayer stands to the right of the imam."

95, Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammad from Ibrahim that Alqamah ibn Qays and al-Aswad ibn Yazid said, 'We were with ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه when suddenly it became time for the prayer. So he stood to pray and we stood behind him, but he made one of us stand on his right and the other on his left and then he stood between us. When he finished he said, "Do it like this when you are three." When he bowed he placed his hands together, palm to palm, and he prayed without the call to prayer or the iqamah saying, "The iqamah of the people around us suffices us."'"

Muhammad said, "We do not adhere to the verdict of ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه concerning three people, but we say that when they are three their Imam should step ahead of them and the others should pray behind him. We similarly do not adhere to his verdict on placing the hands together, palm to palm, for he used to place his hands together, palm to palm, when he bowed and then place them between his knees. As for praying without the call to prayer or the iqamah, that is sufficient but the call to prayer and the iqamah are better. And if one calls the iqamah but does not call the Adhan for prayer that is better than leaving out the iqamah because the people have prayed in a group. That is the verdict of Abu Hanifa.

96. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us from Hammad from Ibrahim that Umar ibn Khattaab رضي الله عنه placed two of them behind him and prayed in front of them, and he would place his hands on his knees. Ibrahim said, 'The way that Umar رضي الله عنه did it is prefereable to me.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this, and it is preferable to us than the way that Ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه did it. That is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, may Allah, the exalted is He, have mercy on him."

31. SOMEONE WHO PRAYED THE OBLIGATORY PRAYER

97. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifa informed us saying, 'Al-Haytham ibn Abi'l-Haytham narrated to us ascribing it to the Prophet (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam) that two men of the companions of the Prophet (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam) prayed Zuhr in their homes thinking that the prayer had been prayed, and then they came while the Prophet (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam) was in prayer. They sat down and didi not join [the prayer]. When the Prophet (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam) finished he called for them and they came with their flanks quaking, fearful that something [revelation] might have newly come about them. He said to them, "What prevented you from praying?" They said, "Messenger of Allah, we thought that the prayer had been done and we prayed in our homes. Then we came here and found you praying, but we thought that it would be unacceptable for us to pray again". He said, "When it is like that, then join the prayer and regard the first the obligatory prayer and this one as supererogatory."'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this, and it is preferable to us than the way that Ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه did it. That is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, may Allah, the exalted is He, have mercy on him. But one may not repeat Fajr, Asr and Maghrib."

98. Muhammad said, "Malik ibn Anas رضي الله عنه informed us from Nafi that Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه said 'If you have prayed Fajr and Maghrib, and then you reach them do not repeat them with more than what you have already prayed.'"

Muhammad said, "As for Fajr and Asr one ought not to pray superegatory prayers after them because of the saying of the Messenger of Allah (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam), 'There is no prayer after Asr until the sun sets, nor is ther any prayer after Fajr unitl the sun rises.' As for for Maghrib it is an odd number of rak'ahs and praying supererogatory prayerswith an odd number is diapproved. So if a man joins them as superegation, when the Imam says the salam, let him add a fourth rak'ah to it, and say the tashahhud and the salam. This is the verdict of Abu Hanifa, Mah Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him."

32. SUPEREROGATORY PRAYERS

99. Muhammad said, "Abu Hanifah informed us saying, 'Abu Sufyan narrated to us from al-Hasan al-Basri that the messenger of Allah (salallahu 'alahyi wa sallam) used to pray while sitting in ihtibah in supererogatory prayers.'"

Muhammad said, "We adhere to this and this and see no harm in it. Then when one reaches the prostration one unties the cloth and prostrates. This is the verdict of Abu Hanifah, may Allah, exalted is He, have mercy on him."

ihtibah is to squat in such a fashion that one ties a cloth or a turban around the legs and back to prevent oneself from falling. It was a characteristic Arabic way of squatting without actually sitting down.
