HTC One M8 Max rumors resurface
Once thought to be gone and buried, an update to HTC's plus-size smartphone could still arrive.

HTC could be readying a 5.5-inch version of its One M8 flagship smartphone after all, according to a new rumor. Chinese website MyDrivers.com says that the device may be here before the year is out.

As the subject of plenty of whispers earlier in the year, the so-called HTC One M8 Max/Prime was thought to be put out to pasture.

Reborn reports suggest that the smartphone could feature a 5.5-inch 2,560x1,440-pixel display and an 18-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization. Powered by Android 4.4 KitKat with HTC Sense 6.5, other hardware could include a 2.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 3,000mAh battery. Allegedly, HTC will build the phone out of an aluminum composite.

Given that this is but one report of the HTC One M8 Max, we should tread very lightly. It's worth noting that we haven't seen any benchmarks or leaked images to corroborate the rumors. HTC has already released multiple versions of its One M8 this year, but yet none of them are of supersize dimensions, while Apple has recently moved into 'phablet' territory with the iPhone 6 Plus.

Strange that, because the current HTC One Max has a bigger battery at 3300mAh.

Even the new "Phablet" from Apple, iPhone 6 plus is only 2915mAh

Using the HTC One Max heavily and tested thoroughly, I must admit, it has a battery like never before seen.

Well, If you want big, except better, expect a very good battery. Although the HTC One Max is very limited and hard to get hold of, it's miles ahead of Apple's phablet and will always out do it.

HTC One Max smartphone with 5.90-inch 1080x1920 display powered by 1.7 GHz processor alongside 2GB RAM compared to Apple A8 chipset with a dual-core CPU. The processor in the iPhone 6 is clocked at 1.39GHz, while the one in its bigger brother runs at 70MHz lower speed, at 1.32GHz. There's a difference in the RAM capacity as well, however minuscule it might be. The reported RAM memory for the iPhone 6 is 987MB, while the iPhone 6 Plus makes do with 975MB.

Oh well, the new flagship product from Apple doesn't match the HTC One Max anywhere. Just thought I'd let you know :)

Seriously thought the following was a joke article, but it wasn't....

Clothing retailers consider larger pockets to fit iPhone 6 Plus

Levi's, J.Crew and L.L. Bean are among the 5 major clothing brands looking to expand pocket size on their jeans and pants to better accommodate the larger Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Designers are particularly eyeing women's clothes, since women's pockets are considerably smaller and shallower than men's pockets.

“Currently our men’s pockets already accommodate the larger phones including the iPhone 6 [and 6 plus]. Women’s is still being evaluated,” an American Eagle representative confirmed to Mashable on Tuesday.

While some labels are just beginning to brainstorm, Lee Jeans designer Whitney Neary admits that the company began discussions of enlarging pocket sizes before the iPhone 6’s September release.

Before you buy a secondhand iPhone or iPad, check its Activation Lock Status on iCloud

The secondhand market for iPhones and iPads is hot, and unfortunately so are some the devices being sold on it. To try and protect people from buying devices that turn out to have been lost, stolen, or otherwise misappropriated, Apple has created a new Activation Lock Status checker on iCloud.com

Before you purchase an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from somebody else, make sure Find My iPhone Activation Lock is turned off and the device is ready for you to use.

Activation Lock is a feature designed to make iPhones and iPads less appealing to thieves. It debuted in iOS 7 and prevents anyone from restoring or otherwise taking over an iPhone or iPad without first entering the Apple ID password of the owner. The theory is, if the device can't be used, it becomes little more than a glass and aluminum paper weight, it's value drops, and so people are less likely to steal them.

Of course, it can't stop thieves who have unwittingly stolen Activation Lock protected iPhones and iPads from trying to pawn them off anyway. That's where the Activation Lock Status checker comes in. Take the EMEI or serial number, enter it in, and iCloud.com will tell you its status.

Via: iDownloadBlog Unfortunately, the Activation Lock Status checker currently only works on the web, and only on a desktop browser. That means you can check an IMEI or serial number emailed or texted to you, if you think you can trust it, or you can bring a laptop with you to an in-person sale, but you can't yet just read it off and plug it into your iPhone or iPad to check. (Of course it's not hard to imagine Apple adding that functionality to a future Find My Friends app update.)

Samsung Shows How Strong The Galaxy Note 4 Is In New “Bend-Test” Video

Apple may have ruled out the ‘bending’ of its iPhone 6 Plus model as being an isolated issue (citing just 9 formal complaints received so far), but majority of the discussions on social media and tech blogs seem to end in agreement – the iPhone 6 Plus does indeed bend on applying the slightest of pressures.

Called #bendgate (rather ‘fondly’ I must say), the issue encompasses all smartphones. How? Previously, you had videos showing off just how easy it was to bend the iPhone 6 Plus out of shape. Now you have almost every other smartphone being subjected to the same treatment. Some people just can’t resist taking potshots at Apple and its products.

Did I say potshots? Nobody enjoys it as much as Samsung does. In its latest video, Samsung decided to subject the Galaxy Note 4 to a “three-point bend test”, as well as a “human weight test” to prove just how strong and durable the Galaxy Note 4 is. And I must say, the “human weight test” is rather funny to watch

The phone does bend of course, but does regain its initial shape with no apparent damage. Samsung credits this to the “mutually reinforcing structure between parts.”. But enough of descriptions. Pictures, speak louder than words. And a video is surely the loudest you can get!

Samsung Says Galaxy Note 4 Screen Gap A “Manufacturing Feature”

That screen gap issue noticed by early Galaxy Note 4 owners is apparently “a necessary manufacturing issue,” and not a production anomaly. Samsung hasn’t said what it plans to do about the issue just yet, but on its European support site, the Korean company spins it in a unique way.

A small gap appears around the outside of the device case
•This gap is a necessary manufacturing feature and some minor rocking or vibration of parts may occur.

Ok, so we can understand that, while designing and manufacturing the Note 4, Samsung decided that because of the device’s internal parts, the gap is necessary.

Over time, friction between parts may cause this gap to expand slightly.

So, you’re telling me that the gap, which is already large enough to hold a credit card, could potentially expand over time? That seems like a recipe for disaster, especially if dirt and grime continues to collect in that space. And if water gets in? Hopefully it doesn’t lead to a damaged screen, or worse.

We’ve seen other manufacturers design devices without a significant screen gap, but Samsung is instead embracing it as a feature. When we played with the Galaxy Note 4 at IFA earlier this month, we didn’t notice any significant issues—people might not even notice it at all. Curiously, the Galaxy Alpha, which features a similar design, doesn’t exhibit a screen gap, though it doesn’t quite contain the amount of components as its larger brother.

This will likely be a non-issue when the Galaxy Note 4 becomes more widely available, but we’ll definitely keep our eye on it as it develops.

OS X iWorm botnet has spread to over 17,000 Macs worldwide

A Russian security firm has highlighted a new piece of malware which has struck some 17,000 Macs across the globe.

The Mac computer and OS X platform is often viewed as a secure haven, particularly when compared to the threats aimed at the far more widespread Windows, but Mac users are treading a thinner and thinner line if they view their machines as impervious to security threats.

The security company, Dr Web, wrote a blog post about the malware Mac.BackDoor.iWorm, which it discovered last month. It has infected and built up a botnet of more than 17,600 Macs as of the last week of September, and it gives the attacker remote backdoor access to the target machine, allowing for various commands to be issued to a wide range of potential ends (from further malware infection of the host, or swiping data, through to spreading infections to other Macs, spamming and so forth).

Dr Web states: "Criminals developed this malware using C++ and Lua. It should also be noted that the backdoor makes extensive use of encryption in its routines. During installation it is extracted into /Library/Application Support/JavaW, after which the dropper generates a p-list file so that the backdoor is launched automatically."

iOS 8 stagnates according to Apple’s own statistics

Apple’s launch of iOS 8 has been met with some polarized reviews. While this is surely a more mature version of iOS 7, legacy devices like the iPhone 4s have nearly been crippled by the update, and on the other hand, a lot of the features are still not fully present, like Continuity for example. If you’re wondering just how well iOS 8 is doing, you’ll be shocked to know that even Apple doesn’t admit good numbers.

Apple has just published its iOS numbers, as tabulated by Apple Store visits. You’d assume that the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus would alone boost the numbers of iOS 8 users when compared to last-month’s numbers, but in reality, all we see is a 1% growth when compared to the previous numbers of September 21st. It could be that sales for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus remained well, but users decided to downgrade to iOS 7 after they were allowed to with the iOS 8.0.1 fiasco. That’s sadly hard to confirm, but we do know that the biggest complaints came from iPhone 4s customers that felt their device slow to a crawl.

These numbers are not the complete install base though, so we should expect other numbers to emerge in the weeks to come as we do expect an Apple event in the next few weeks.

Apple fan who mocked ‘Bendgate’ finds that his iPhone 6 Plus bent during regular use

There’s a real question about whether or not bent iPhone 6 Plus models are actually a common occurrence but there’s no doubt that some models do seem to be bending for users under regular use. Over on Reddit, one iPhone 6 Plus owner has posted pictures of his iPhone 6 Plus (see above), which he says bent even though he “babied” it and placed it in a sturdy leather case.

Even more ironically, the owner says that his device bent after he repeatedly made fun of people who were “freaking out” over “Bendgate” when the controversy first arose just two short weeks ago. And indeed, if we look back through the user’s past Reddit comments, we can see that he did stick up for Apple once the first Unbox Therapy video popped up and quickly spread like wildfire across the web.

“Wow. You people are worrying and canceling orders already!” he sneered 14 days agoin a thread on whether the iPhone 6 would bend or not. “There’s been like 4 posts on the internet of dubious quality and everybody is acting like this is a epidemic! Relax people!”

He’s definitely not laughing anymore, although he insists that he still loves Apple and has never had a problem like this with any iPhone he’s owned before. He plans on returning the device to his local Apple Store, where he expects Apple will happily replace the device with an unbent model. He also doesn’t think Apple really needs to do any major damage control here because “Bendgate” still isn’t as big a deal as people are making it out to be.

“I think the best-case scenario is that they do a silent update on the design reinforcing the area, while announcing they are doubling down on their acceptance of bent phones very publicly,” he writes. “It’s not a game-breaking bug in anyway, it’s merely aesthetic. Just schedule an Apple Store appointment at the time of best convenience for you and get a new phone. I’m sure there’s going to be millions of phones that are unaffected by this problem.”
