Indian Village "Korauna" wants a name change

swarajyamag.com/insta/coronavirus-fallout-facing-stigma-p...

Located about 90 kilometres from Lucknow, this tiny hamlet is in deep distress.

Almost overnight, the village and its residents have become the object of ridicule by outsiders and all because of its name - Korauna - that sounds similar to the deadly virus corona.

"Even our relatives joke about the similarity in the name and tell us that they will not visit Korauna. If we tell any stranger where we live in, we are greeted with amused glances. One person who called on my phone -- apparently a wrong number -- said 'How are you still alive?' - when I told him that I was from Korauna," said Raju Tripathi, a local resident.

Korauna, incidentally, is the first halt of the 84-Kosi Parikrama -- a pilgrimage that is undertaken by thousands, a fortnight after the Holi festival every year.

"The name of the village has been existing for decades, but suddenly, we are being treated as pariah," said Gokul, a local farmer.

Quote:
Coronavirus testing kits heading to the UK is contaminated with coronavirus

News Watch

31 March 2020

According to multiple reports, the testing kits heading to the United Kingdom have been said to have been contaminated with coronavirus.

The UK government claimed at least 11,000 tests are being carried out in a day, but aims to increase the number of tests a day to 25,000 by mid-April.

In order to achieve this, UK’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that the country had ordered 3.5 million antibody tests, as the government turned to private companies to meet the target.

However a major delay which could dampen hopes of realising the testing target emerged, after Daily Telegraph, reported that key components of the ordered testing from Eurofins, a company based in Luxembourg, had been contaminated with Covid-19.

gathered that the company, Eurofins warned laboratories in the UK that a delivery of parts referred to as ‘probes and primers’ had been contaminated.

The parts can be properly cleaned and used, but the major challenge now is that it would result only in a delay.

A spokesperson for Eurofins told the Telegraph: ‘In rare occasions, delays in some orders may occur if based on Eurofins Genomics stringent quality and environmental control procedures, manufacturing of a product may not meet the quality or purity criteria set by Eurofins Genomics.

‘We are aware that contaminations of the nature you mentioned have been observed by several primers and probes manufacturers around the world after they produced SARS-COV2 positive controls.

‘Those initial problems can be easily resolved by proper cleaning and production segregation procedures.’

Meanwhile in Nigeria, the Director-general of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Chikwe Ihekweazu has said that not less than 6,000 people are being traced in Lagos and Abuja over their contacts with coronavirus patients, reports.

Ihekweazu made this revelation in an interview on Channels Televison on Monday, March 30, adding that at least 2,000 people have been tested across the country.

Although only two people have died since the West African country reported its first case in February, the country has only been able to test at least 2000 in a country of more than 150 million people and the number of infected people may be in thousands.

According to what I've read the virus only lasts a maximum of 3 days on objects. So shouldn't a 3 day quarantine sort it out? No cleaning. No work. Just 3 days in storage and then good to go.

Not sure what you mean. I meant the contaminated test kits. Shouldn't 3 days of quarantine sort that out?

I am not sure about the validity of this news because it takes longer than 3 days for the kit to get here from China so how can they be infected?

Good point.

I'm not sure about this 3 day thing. I haven't looked into it, but it seems like it's the accepted understanding that the virus does not last longer than 3 days on objects.

So as you say, it takes longer than 3 days for the shipment to land, so where's the problem?

I filled up my car with petrol last week just in case (it was coming to empty anyways)

Price was £1.14 a litre

I went today to fill up my wife's car at the same station and it was £1.02 a litre

The only thing was, I noticed it wouldn't let me fill over £30 but I managed to get £34 worth out.

(this was an unmanned Asda petrol station)
