Assalmu alaikum waRahmatullahi waBarkatuhu,

Is it sunnah not to drink water after meals?

The only reference I got after searching is that Allamah Ibnul Qayyim رحمه الله has mentioned that the habit of Nabi Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam was that of not drinking immediately after eating as this is harmful to the digestion process

Translation: It was not the practice of Nabi Sallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam to drink water before eating food, whether the water was cold or hot. It (drinking water) is extremely dislike (from a medical stand point).
(Zad ul-Maad V.4 Pg.205 Muassisa al-Risalah)

(زاد المعاد في هدي خير العباد (4/ 205

Translation: It is against the well-being of an individual to drink (immediately) after exercising, after extreme fatigue, after intimacy, (before and after) eating, after eating fruits, after a shower, and at the time of awakening from a sleep.    Question: 39943    Pakistan
With reference to your fatwa (Fatwa: 762/623 =B/1429) I have question that I have read in book Uswai Rasool-E-Akram (pbuh) written by Sheikh Professor Dr Abdul Hai (RA) the Khalifa of Hakeem al-Ummah and Sheikh of Mufti Taqi Usmani that he writes with reference of Madrij al-Nabuwah (pbuh) that it is sunnah to avoid drinking water just after meal. Madarij al-Nabuwah is an authentic book, so can we practice this?
  Answer: 39943   Jul 08,2012
(Fatwa: 1477/1126/B=1433)

Madarij al-Nabuwah is an authentic and reliable book. It was written by the grand scholar and Muhaddith Hadhrat Maulana Abdul Haque Muhaddith Dehlavi (رحمة الله عليه). It is written on page 17 of the book that the holy Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not drink water immediately after having food. The same is also written in Shamail Kubra, Vol 1, p 173, with the reference of this book. However our Shaikh Hadhrat Maulana Zakaria (رحمة الله عليه) says that one should drink some water in the middle of meal so that the context of the dua [الحمد لله الذي اطعمنا وسقانا وجعلنا مسلمين] which is recited after having meal could apply as the dua means: All praise is for Allah who has fed us, given us drink and made us amongst the Muslims.

As per the views of physicians and doctors it makes the food part of the body and keeps the system of stomach accurate, and one remains away from cold, influenza and gastric problems etc. One should drink water after half an hour or 45 minutes of food.
Allah (Subhana Wa Ta'ala) knows Best

I was told it was Sunnah as a kid but I could never accept it simply because after ones meal, one feels thirsty and this would be injustice if we weren't allowed. I concluded that if we were eating hot food and then drink cold water over it, it has an effect on the intestines. So if we were to eat something cold, like humos, then of course the effects aren't the same

After many years of searching and asking, I read a similar explanation in "The medicine of the Prophet".

At the end of the day, if it was Sunnah NOT to drink water immediately after eating, then what would one do if he was choking or had a very dry throat.

The Sunnah is beautiful and its the final way of life. We can't go wrong.

I had asked Mufti Ismaail Moosa the same exact question, and he responded that there is no sunnah with regards to drinking water with a meal.

Wallaahu A'lam.

Is it Sunnah for a person to drink sips of water before eating food?.
Praise be to Allaah.
There is nothing in the Prophet’s Sunnah to indicate that it is mustahabb to drink water or sips of water before eating food. Perhaps the one who thought that that is Sunnah imagined it because it is proven in the Sunnah that it is mustahabb to drink in three draughts. But this is something other than what the questioner thought, because the fact that that is mustahabb has nothing to do with eating food. It is the same whether one drinks before or after eating or whilst eating, or in any other situation; it is mustahabb for him to consume his drink in three draughts.

It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to breathe three times when drinking, and he would say: “It is more thirst-quenching, healthier and more wholesome.” Narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh (2028).

Ibn al-Qayyim said: What is meant by breathing whilst drinking is moving the vessel away from the mouth and breathing outside of it, then going back to drinking. Zaad al-Ma’aad, 4/210.

There are great wisdom and important benefits in drinking in this manner. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) drew attention to them when he said: “It is more thirst-quenching, healthier and more wholesome.”

Thirst-quenching means it is more hydrating and beneficial.

Healthier means it is better for one.

Wholesome means that it is healing; it relieves one from intense thirst and sickness to which that may lead, because it comes to the stomach in stages one after another; the second draught soothes that which could not be soothed by the first, and the third soothes that which could not be soothed by the second.

And it was said that wholesome means that it is free from any disease or harm that may result from drinking in one draught.

See: Sharh Saheeh Muslim by al-Nawawi, 13/199

Ibn al-Qayyim said: One of the problems caused by drinking in one draught is that there is a fear of choking, as the oesophagus may be blocked by the large amount of liquid flowing through it. But if he breathes slowly, then drinks, he will be safe from that. End quote.

Zad al-Ma’aad, 4/231

And Allah knows best.

From all the answers I've read, this one is a brilliant explanation.

This also suggests the drinking of the water after the food, Allahu alum

Somr strange comments here, especially the Hadith

Quote:
Water is a great gift of Allah. Without it we will not survive. Humans as well as animals drink water. Both Muslims as well as non-Muslims drink. Everyone has a different way of drinking. According to some doctor’s drinking water before meal is best for health but must be half ‘n’ hour before. We can also drink water after meal but after half ‘n’ hour or one hour after meal would be better, but we should avoid drinking water during meal because it causes digestion problems.
According to some nutritionists the theory is if you drink just before, during or just after eating, you are diluting the digestive juices, making it harder for your body to digest the food. One and a half hour after eating to allow the enzymes and stomach secretions complete their work otherwise you dilute their concentration and render them less effective.
It’s a scientific fact that drinking water before meal is good for health, whereas during meal, water drinking should be avoided. After having meal, water drinking puts a burden on stomach.
As in Islam it’s a very famous HADITH:
Water, before meal is Gold,
Water, during meal is Silver, and,
Water, after meal is Iron.
The habit of Nabi (SAW) was of not to drink immediately after eating as this is harmful to the digestion process. However, if there is a pressing need to drink immediately after that, then only drink enough to quench the thirst. One may then drink after some time elapses. This elapsed time is estimated to be 20-30 minutes.
The question arises that what type of serious disease it may cause ?
Drinking cold water or water after meal = Cancer
For those who like to drink cold water. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.
Once this “sludge” reacted with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer.
THE RIGHT WAY TO DRINK WATER

As some doctors, nutritionists agree to the fact that drinking water after or immediately after meal may cause to cancer or some abdominal or stomach problems arises or drinking water immediately after meal making harder to digest food.
Drinking water before a meal can help you lose weight because it fills you up. Drinking water after you have eaten fatty foods may cause some problems and may produce weight gain. Drink water before your meals to limit the amount of fatty foods and other foods you eat. Drinking two glasses of water before you eat can fill you up. This will help you to be less hungry and eat less. Stay away from drinking cold water after meals that include high-fat foods.
Please Keep In Mind
Drinking water is beneficial and necessary for our health and requirement of our body but it may be worse if you don’t drink on right time .As some said “Time decided each and everything”, so you should follow the time and right instructions to drink water “DON’T DRINK WATER IMMEDIATELY AFTER MEAL IT MAY CAUSE CANCER”.

Fatwa No : 90852
The Prophet's way of drinking while eating
Fatwa Date : Thul-Qi'dah 13, 1426 / 14-12-2005

Please I would like to know how Prophet Muhammad used to drink water during a meal. Was he having a drink while eating or at the end of the meal?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We do not know any evidence about the Prophet drinking while eating or after eating. However, the jurists stated that it is disliked to drink while eating; their evidence about this ruling is that drinking while eating is harmful. Al-Bayhaqi from the Hanbali school said: 'Drinking water while eating is disliked even if this is not done as a habit because it is harmful.' He further said: 'Ibn Al-Jawzi said: 'Water should not be drunk while eating as this is healthier.'
Allaah Knows best.

I appreciate the question is "Is it sunnah not to drink water after meals?" (of which I do not know the answer) but I just wanted to say that I was told by a homeopathic doctor in Pakistan that drinking water after meals may be harmful.
@ Abu Muhammad: Funnily enough this same doctor told me his father (also a homeopathic doctor) used to say
Quote:
Water, before meal is Gold,
Water, during meal is Silver, and,
Water, after meal is Iron.
He did not however attribute it to Rasullullah (sual allahu alaihi wa salam).

Please Note: The thoughts and research of worldly specialists do not effect the status of sunnah.

So, refraining from harmful things is Sunnah.. and drinking water after meals is harmful then.. it is Sunnah..
( In the fatwa I mentioned maybe this is the reason, but we don't know)

( like cutting nails on Friday isn't Sunnah but.. its Sunnah to attain cleanliness on jummah so its Sunnah in this regard..)
