So he's Muslim, probably with a few letters after his name showing his worldly status but overlooking the Sunnah due to his lack of education/faith. If there are brothers present there, maybe one of them can ask him about hygiene and his lavatory etiquette. What I mean is, does he use water or toilet paper.

If we want to be hygienic, we have to stick to the Quran and Sunnah, any other way just won't work. Something the unprofessor doesn't understand because of his education

It's not his "education" per se. I think the entire western education system is just a guise for indoctrination. On so many aspects. Even clear scientific facts can easily be ridiculed in schools, colleges and universities if it doesn't meet their agenda. There's plenty of articles available about this in more details.

Quote:
Public education in America today is almost the opposite of education, according to an education expert who calls the nation’s schooling “indoctrination.”

Admitting that i am a very weak and sinful Muslim, but I say that i refuse to believe any scientific research that points towards a 'harm or danger' in any Sunnah .
Science can err, but the Sunnah and Shariah can not.

Outline for a Response:

  1. Scientific rationale for giving Dextrose to an infant is already proven. Giving Dates and Honey is actually a fantastic option because both have low glycaemic indices and are high in fructose which is readily soluble when consumed.

  2. Saliva of Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam) was special and its efficacy is proven in the famous Saheeh Hadeeth at Khayber when he administered it in the eye of Sayyidina Ali (RA) and he was cured. This cannot be applied to anyone else and it is an exclusive blessing towards the Nabi of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam).

  3. There is no real inherent danger of Mother’s Saliva passing any infection to anew born (since they have shared bodily fluids anyway) , in fact Mother’s Saliva has shown in limited studies to boost the baby’s immune system. In Islam Tahneek is recommended to be performed by someone who is practising and upon Sunnah so a Mother can perform this.

  4. If an (unrelated) stranger is asked to perform Tahneek and there are no visible signs of infection and he (or she) is in generally good health then the danger of passing infection to the infant is minimal because unlike kissing (for which Medical science has precedence and studies) the amount of saliva is minimal therefore the risk of infection is minimal. Medically, Infections, such as mononucleosis (the kissing disease), caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are spread via oral transmission from virus-containing saliva but in case of Tahneek the actual Saliva is not being passed or exchanged but in trace amounts.

  5. If the father is not suffering from (current ailments) and he is also practising then there is also minimal danger of infection and he can also perform the Tahneek.

  6. If Tahneek is requested by someone else and they have obvious signs of infection OR the baby is premature of susceptible to an infection then (Qadhi) Imran says according to the Islamic Law (dictates) due to impending harm Tahneek should not be performed by the person. Because Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam) had special miraculous properties (due to the status of Prophethood) and this is not found in another person, their piety and status (towards Allah) doesn’t overcome normal (human) physical illnesses and attributes.

  • This is NOT a response

  • 4 is being checked by Doctors.

i know the sunnah mentions dates, but does it also mention honey, or is it mentioned by the fuqaha? Isn't it advised not to give honey to children under 2 years old?

The research should contain details of a breakdown of the properties of dates and it's reaction to saliva. (or what happens to water/saliva when mixed into a date to make a paste and applied by a finger, not a spoon, as we know spoons can remove certain chemical elements from an item, hence the Sunnah of eating with fingers - Spoons could include, spatula's, syringe, glass etc)

The saliva of the prophet (saw) is not in question. This is a Sunnah that the prophet (saw) knew would be continued by every believing parent till judgement day!

Almost every Sunnah has been cross examined by science, only for people to really understand it's virtues.

Example:
Toothbrush vs miswak
Sleeping on the right
Drinking water sitting
Sitting/squatting when in the toilet
Smiling
Power nap
Eating with fingers
Drinking in sips
Licking the fingers while eating
Fasting 2/7 days a week
And so on.

These and many more have been challenged by science, only to concede to the Sunnah.

There is infinite wisdom behind every Sunnah.

JazakAllah very helpful
I was looking for point no 4 because my friend said that, at that time tahneek was done by prophet Mohammad (saw) so its an exceptional case. But i believe the sunnah is for us too. Wallahu alam

With all of this in mind, one should ask:

  • Can a "newborn" baby digest anything except milk?
  • What does saliva "really" do?
  • Can saliva digest the food for the baby so the weak immune system of the baby does not require any pressure to digest?
  • Does the date digest in the mouth when mixed with saliva?
  • Can water digest a date the same way saliva can?
  • Why do people apply saliva to cuts and small wounds?
  • Is saliva an antibacteria?
  • What are the properties of saliva?
  • What is Amylase?
  • Can HIV Aids be spread through the saliva?

Answer all these and I'm sure you will conclude that this is the most natural way to give a sugar to a newborn baby - without any man made sugary gels as mentioned by the BBC! All our answers can be found in nature - if we look and understand.
