Saudi blogger Badawi 'flogged for Islam insult'

From Middle East

Mr Badawi will reportedly be flogged weekly until he has received 1,000 lashes

A Saudi Arabian blogger has been publicly flogged after being convicted of cybercrime and insulting Islam, reports say.

Raif Badawi, who was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in jail, was flogged 50 times. The flogging will be carried out weekly, campaigners say.

Mr Badawi, the co-founder of a now banned website called the Liberal Saudi Network, was arrested in 2012.

Rights groups condemned his conviction and the US appealed for clemency.

On Thursday state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki urged the Saudi authorities to "cancel this brutal punishment" and to review his case.
In addition to his sentence, Mr Badawi was ordered to pay a fine of 1 million riyals ($266,000; £175,000).

In 2013 he was cleared of apostasy, which could have carried a death sentence.

Last year Mr Badawi's lawyer was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of a range of offences in an anti-terrorism court, the Associated Press news agency reported.
'Act of cruelty'

The flogging took place outside a mosque in the Red Sea city of Jeddah after Friday prayers, witnesses said.

AFP news agency, quoting people at the scene, said Mr Badawi arrived at the mosque in a police car and had the charges read out to him in front of a crowd.

He was then made to stand with his back to onlookers and whipped, though he remained silent, the witnesses said.

The sentence was widely condemned by human rights groups.

"The flogging of Raif Badawi is a vicious act of cruelty which is prohibited under international law," said Said Boumedouha of Amnesty International.

"By ignoring international calls to cancel the flogging Saudi Arabia's authorities have demonstrated an abhorrent disregard for the most basic human rights principles."

Saudi Arabia enforces a strict version of Islamic law and does not tolerate political dissent. It has some of the highest social media usage rates in the region, and has cracked down on domestic online criticism, imposing harsh punishments.

Cruelty! yes, cruelty is wrong. But why do the western media uses microscopes on incidents in Muslim countries. Elsewhere, they are blind. May god make them blind forever.

UN urges Saudi king to halt 'cruel' flogging of blogger

AFP
15 January 2015 18:18 GMT

The UN human rights chief on Thursday urged the Saudi king to pardon a blogger sentenced to 10 years jail plus 1,000 lashes, and to review the "cruel" penalty of flogging.

"Flogging is, in my view, at the very least, a form of cruel and inhuman punishment," UN commissioner Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said in a statement.

"Such punishment is prohibited under international human rights law," he added, appealing to King Abdullah "to halt the public flogging by pardoning Mr (Raef) Badawi, and to urgently review this type of extraordinarily harsh penalty".

Badawi received a first instalment of 50 lashes last Friday and is expected to have 20 weekly whipping sessions until his punishment is complete.

The co-founder of the now-banned Saudi Liberal Network, he has been found guilty in a Saudi court of insulting Islam.

His wife Ensaf Haidar, who sought asylum in Canada with her three children after Badawi was jailed in June 2012, has called for his release.

The United States, Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) have denounced the flogging as a horrific form of punishment, saying Badawi was exercising his right to freedom of expression.

Ottawa has also condemned the punishment and called for a pardon.

Let's hope they don't give in to the UN and be strong like the way the Taliban didn't give in.

Sadly it's a different version of Islam for the poor and a different one for the rich

You never here of a royal being flogged despite being involved in alcohol, drugs, prostituion, homo sexuality and what not

If anyone deserves a flogging more than anyone then it's the royals !

Does anyone what his blasphemous statements were? Was he insulting Allah Ta'ala, Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa salam and Islam or was he insulting Saudi Salafi rulers, scholars and institutions?

I skimmed through one of his old articles. Seems like he despises religious Saudis, loves off the U.S. and is definitely a liberal not strictly following Shariah, but he didn't sound like a non-Muslim at all.

Saudi govt. is just using the deen to maintain power. There are worse people than this blogger amongst them, like Bandar Bush.
