Trocadero in Piccadilly Circus plan to build 1,000-space mosque

A mosque for up to 1,000 worshipers could be built inside the Trocadero building at Piccadilly Circus.

Developers have submitted plans to Westminster council to convert parts of the West End landmark that would also include a community centre.

The Aziz Foundation, an education charity for British Muslims, has proposed transforming the former basement cinema that has been derelict since 2006 and parts of the ground floor in Rupert Street for use for praying and events.

The foundation is owned by Asif Aziz, who set up property giant Criterion Capital and in 2005 bought the London Trocadero and Piccadilly Hotel for £225 million.

A spokesman said surveys had revealed a “significant shortfall in the amount of prayer space for Muslims living and working in the West End” with only three in the area.

The application has received more than 250 comments on the council website.

Some have objected to potential increased traffic, with others claiming that a place of worship is not in keeping with an area famous for its bars, clubs, casinos and nightlife.

The proposed mosque site received permission for use as a community and arts centre in 2018. Planners are expected to decide later in the year.

I read the above In the news this morning only to be sent the following message by WhatsApp

Urgent Support Required for Piccadilly Mosque Application !!!

The Far Right are mobilizing objections to our planning application for a Mosque in Piccadilly.

www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/05/18/voice-opposition-to-p...

We have consulted residents, had open days and been very open for the past several months. Not a hint of an objection. Then suddenly the above article is published and suddenly hundreds of objections have been posted on Westminster City Council website. This is clearly orchestrated and people will use it to try and demonise Muslims again.

How you can help:

 1.           Visit the application comment page on Westminster City Council’s website here:

idoxpa.westminster.gov.uk/online-applications/application...

2.            Scroll down to ‘Login and make a comment’ and click ‘register here’ and ‘sign up now’ – you will need to use an e-mail address, create a password and receive a verification code.

3.            Once you have created an account, Login using your details

4.            Complete the form to make a comment selected ‘support’ on the stance section and leave comment (see below).

5.            Click Submit

You should send comments that support the need for a new Mosque in the area, some suggested comments are below:

• "There is a shortage in current praying facilities in this area. We often have to pray in hallways, stairwells and the streets"
• “There are no praying facilities for females in this area. This is urgently required!”
• “This building is currently vacant and this application will bring this building in a use that will serve the wider community”
• “This is a great application, providing a new prayer space for Muslims living and working in the West End were there is currently a significant shortfall of space”
• “I really hope Westminster City Council approve this application. This will provide a much needed community facility for all people living in the area”
• “The Trocadero has been unused for many years so it’s great to see the space will be put to good use”

We have until May 27 to submit our support. Please Act Now!

I think the whole thing is fake from beginning to end. None of it makes sense. I don’t remember a cinema being in trocadero area. Also it’s a high income unaffordable area for anyone unless your bringing in high revenues. No way they would give it up or sell it to either a masjid, church or synagogue.

Well its apparently owned by a Muslim.

Did you know the nearest mosque there is in soho! In the middle of prostitutes!

The area can do with a mosque. There are so many Muslims in the area who don't or can't get to Salah.

I was once working on an installation in China Town, just behind this area. As I was working in one of the ally ways, I saw a muslim family in the opposite building, MashaAllah, I saw what looked like a Qur'an in the window sill, then later I saw a Chinese man praying Salah and then a little child also praying with him.

It's always good to have places where people can pray.

Yes, I don't like the idea of building these things to attract Muslims to come and shop in the area. But since it is a place where loads of tourists from all over the world go and lots of Muslims shop and work there, I think it's neat :)

It's an iconic location and will ring alarm bells around the world!

Seems pretty legit. The Trocadero is a proposed site for a hotel the Cinema used to be in the basement.

The owner Asif Aziz is a property billionaire born in Malawi.

That’s interesting to know never heard of asif Aziz be interesting to find out a bit more about him. Regents masjid is the closest I can get to in the city. Being Malawian hopefully he will be hanafi. Really hoping he’s not Shia. A friend was very excited about a masjid opening close to Golders Green a prominent Jewish area. Only to find out it’s a massive Shia masjid. Not being prejudice towards anyone. Anything that helps us and our children to continue to practice is a blessing.
