IN A RECENT SIMULATION, A CORONAVIRUS KILLED 65 MILLION PEOPLE
WE ARE WOEFULLY UNPREPARED FOR A PANDEMIC
.

BY KRISTIN HOUSER / JANUARY 27 2020

In October 2019, a group of 15 business people, government officials, and health experts gathered around a table in New York to plan out the global response to a worldwide outbreak of a never-before-seen — and completely fictional — coronavirus.

It was a training exercise with disturbing similarities, in retrospect, to 2019-nCoV — the Chinese virus that has swiftly gone global this month.

Three and a half hours later, the group finished the simulation exercise — and despite their best efforts, they couldn’t prevent the hypothetical coronavirus from killing 65 million people.

The fictional coronavirus at the center of the Event 201 simulation — a collaboration between the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, the World Economic Forum, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — was called CAPS, and it started with pigs in Brazil before spreading to farmers, not unlike how 2019-nCoV reportedly began with animals before spreading to people.

In the simulation, CAPS infected people all across the globe within six months, and by the 18-month mark, it had killed 65 million people and triggered a global financial crisis.

The “players” in the Event 201 simulation included health experts from the United Nations and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as several academics and representatives from private companies. In other words, they were the same types of people likely to plan the world’s response to a real-life coronavirus pandemic.

That makes the exercise’s devastating outcome particularly troubling. But according to Event 201’s organizers, the purpose of the simulation wasn’t to stir up fear. Instead, they hoped it would serve as a learning experience, highlighting both the potential impact of a pandemic as well as current gaps in our preparedness for one.

To that end, after the simulation ended, they created a list of seven actions that leaders in both the public and private sectors could take now to prepare for a scenario like Event 201.

The troubling implication remains, though, that if 2019-nCoV reaches the pandemic level, it might already be too late to prevent the millions of deaths predicted by Event 201.

Whistle blower: 'Do NOT go outside': Nurse in China issues warning, claims up to 90,000 already infected with coronavirus

Experts fear the new coronavirus in China and a possible epidemic for two reasons: it's spreading at a much faster rate than other viruses, and it's transferable to other humans for days before symptoms can be detected, allowing infected patients to spread the disease to others without realizing it.

On Saturday, the Daily Mail reported that an unnamed woman believed to be a nurse in Wuhan, China, claimed that there are actually as many as 90,000 people already infected in China. She posted a video on social media warning people to stay inside.

"I would like to say that everyone who is currently watching this video, do not go outside. Don't party. Do not eat out," she said. "If you are safe now, you will be able to meet your family again healthy next year."

The woman went on to say that cities throughout the country are overwhelmed and need more supplies to effectively fight the virus. .

Medical simulation shows shocking number of people could die of coronavirus in just 18 months
Not good

Global fear over the coronavirus grew exponentially this week — and a recent medical simulation proves there may be good reason to be concerned.

As the Chinese government quarantines 40 million people in and around the city of Wuhan — where the disease outbreak originated — the United States government is working to evacuate all known U.S. citizens from the area.

More than 1,400 confirmed cases of the disease have already been confirmed, including two in the U.S., while the death toll has risen to more than 40 people.

But Eric Toner, a scientist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, is not shocked about how rapidly the disease is spreading.

Just three months ago, Toner ran a staged a hypothetical pandemic and found that a rapid-spreading disease similar to coronavirus could infect people in every country within just six months. Even more shockingly, Toner discovered the disease could kill 65 million people within just 18 months.

"I have thought for a long time that the most likely virus that might cause a new pandemic would be a coronavirus," Toner said, according to Business Insider.

"We don't yet know how contagious it is. We know that it is being spread person to person, but we don't know to what extent," he explained. "An initial first impression is that this is significantly milder than SARS. So that's reassuring. On the other hand, it may be more transmissible than SARS, at least in the community setting."

Toner's simulation did not specifically use the coronavirus, but a vaccine-resistant disease that is deadly and as easy to spread as the flu; the coronavirus checks all of those boxes. The simulation started in Brazil's pig farms (coronavirus originated in a food market that also sold live animals), then spread outward as more people contradicted the disease. After 18 months, 65 million people in the simulated perished.

What could mitigate the spread of coronavirus, Toner explained, is the rapid development of a vaccine, which scientists have already begun developing.

"If we could make it so that we could have a vaccine within months rather than years or decades, that would be a game changer," he said.

The Wuhan coronavirus has hit Xinjiang, where China has imprisoned at least 1 million Uighur Muslims. Its filthy detention camps will make inmates sitting ducks.

The Wuhan coronavirus has reached Xinjiang in western China, prompting fears that the million Uighur Muslims detained in prison camps across the region are helpless to infection.

Authorities reported two cases in the autonomous southwestern region on Thursday, Radio Free Asia (RFA) and The Wall Street Journal reported, citing local health authorities.

Conditions at the prison camps are dire, with poor sanitation, hygiene, and cramped living conditions, according to former inmates. There are at least 465 scattered across the region.

The coronavirus, also called 2019-nCoV, has now killed 26 people and infected more than 870.

Dolkun Isa, president of the World Uyghur Congress exile group, told RFA "the lives of millions of people will be at stake."

29JAN2020: Lancer Research

www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(2...

Findings

The ten genome sequences of 2019-nCoV obtained from the nine patients were extremely similar, exhibiting more than 99·98% sequence identity. Notably, 2019-nCoV was closely related (with 88% identity) to two bat-derived severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-like coronaviruses, bat-SL-CoVZC45 and bat-SL-CoVZXC21, collected in 2018 in Zhoushan, eastern China, but were more distant from SARS-CoV (about 79%) and MERS-CoV (about 50%). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that 2019-nCoV fell within the subgenus Sarbecovirus of the genus Betacoronavirus, with a relatively long branch length to its closest relatives bat-SL-CoVZC45 and bat-SL-CoVZXC21, and was genetically distinct from SARS-CoV. Notably, homology modelling revealed that 2019-nCoV had a similar receptor-binding domain structure to that of SARS-CoV, despite amino acid variation at some key residues.

Misinformation on the coronavirus death toll is spreading. Here are the facts
USA Today (Arlington)
2 February 2020

As health officials around the world grapple with the outbreak of a respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus that has spread from Wuhan, China, online misinformation has spread about the number of deaths related to the new virus.

The number of confirmed cases of the virus worldwide numbered 14,637 and the total confirmed deaths stood at 305 as of midday Feb. 2, according to data collected and mapped by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering. The data is drawn from sources such as the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and China’s National Health Commission.

The Hubei province in China, which includes Wuhan, has so far reported 294 deaths.

False death toll numbers spread on social media
Those figures stand in stark contrast to social media posts and online stories that have erroneously claimed the number of fatalities is actually in the thousands.

The Geller Report, a website run by anti-Islamic activist Pamela Geller, for example, published and spread a headline reading: “CORONAVIRUS: Reports of 10,000 DEAD in Wuhan, China.”

But the story links to one “unconfirmed” report that is actually just hearsay on a website about gold and metals, which has a disclaimer that says it can’t vouch for the “accuracy or completeness” of its information.

It published an email on Jan. 24 from someone named “Robert,” who wrote: “I just received a call from a close American friend of mine who just got off the phone with a Chinese friend, who has relatives in Wuhan. He says there may already be ~10,000 dead there from the virus.” The email offers no other evidence for the claim.

Likewise, some Facebook users shared a post that claimed – without any sourcing – that the “CORONAVIRUS MUCH WORSE THAN YOU’RE BEING TOLD – THOUSANDS DEAD,” and regurgitated the falsehood that there is an existing patent for the new coronavirus – which has been previously debunked.

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that often cause respiratory illnesses in humans and other illnesses in animals, according to the CDC. The new coronavirus is being referred to as the 2019 novel coronavirus, or 2019-nCoV.

The U.S., to date, has eight confirmed cases of the virus.
