Fireman Sam embroiled in Islamophobia row after character 'treads on Koran page'

www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/fireman-sam-embroiled-in-islam...

An episode of children’s programme Fireman Sam in which a character appears to tread on a page from the Koran has been withdrawn over accusations of Islamophobia.

In a show called Troubled Waters, Elvis the firefighter slips on some pieces of paper while carrying a tray of hot drinks.

One of the sheets flies past the screen and seems to be a page from Islam’s holy book, dealing with punishments for non-believers.

Miqdaad Versi, from the Muslim Council of Britain, tweeted: "Have no idea what went through the producers' minds when they thought this was a good idea #baffled."

Twitter user BirdsOfJannah wrote: “Islamophobia in @FiremanSamUK? Why are there Quran pages on the floor & flying over the place?”

Another wrote: “Children's program Fireman Sam stepping on the Quran. SHAME on this program for promoting hatred against Muslims!”

The episode has now been withdrawn from Channel 5’s streaming site and producers HIT Entertainment apologised "unreservedly" to viewers.

The company, which produces shows including Bob the Builder, Pingu and Thomas the Tank Engine, added that it had cut ties with the animation studio involved with the episode.

A spokeswoman said: "It has been brought to our attention that in an episode of Fireman Sam (Series 9, Episode 7), an image of the Koran is briefly depicted.

“The page was intended to show illegible text and we deeply regret this error. We sincerely apologise for any distress or offence it may have caused.

"We will no longer be working with the animation studio responsible for this mistake. In addition, we are taking immediate action to remove this episode from circulation and we are reviewing our content production procedures to ensure this never happens again.

"Again, we apologise unreservedly to our viewers."

The programme first aired on October 8 in 2014 and was available to watch online at any time on the My 5 video on demand service

so was this a mistake as they put it or was it purposefully done?

did they choose which surah to trample on (Al- Mulk: The Sovereignty) to trample upon the sovereignty of Allah (which they can never do) or was it just a coincidence?

Whoever the animation studio is run by, (no longer used by Fireman Sam) must've done it on purpose. How can an animation accidently insert images of The Quran, they could've easily just used plain paper!

Really pathetic!

A little too detailed to call it a mistake

Possible animation studio?

[quote]The British TV series animation program "Fireman Sam" is completely done by Xing Xing studio with a crew of 100 artists and it took them about 1 year and 7 months to finish this show and importantly the British clients have approved all of these episodes. To celebrate the successful completion of this project and to thank everyone who has worked on this project, Xing Xing hosted a celebration party for this special event to acknowledge the artists' hard work and efforts.

"Fireman Sam" is a one-season-one-year 52 episodes per season animated TV series. It has been translated into 25 languages and broadcasted in over 40 countries- the British BBC and S4C have been airing it for 16 years in a row. The show had always been produced by stop motion animation techniques in the past, and the revolutionary breakthrough took place in 2007 when Xing Xing started to use the full 3D CG approach to produce it, which not only helped speed up production progress but also significantly improved the quality. The characters depicted in the show have a new level of vividness and life in stunning colorful scene sets.

At the party, Becky Bristow-Executive Vice President at Xing Xing, thanked each team/department in the crew by saying she's very proud of the crew and very much impressed by their work and then encouraged everyone to keep working hard and to aim at working on other projects in the future because Xing Xing artists have the abilities to do that.

Xing Xing President Lifeng Wang talked in front of everybody with an emotional speech, he said "the successful completion of the Fireman Sam series is regarded as the milestone for the development of Xing Xing!" because in retrospect, there were only a few dozens of artists when this project got kicked out at the very beginning, but Xing Xing has been constantly recruiting new talents to join the studio and Xing Xing has now become a higher-end animation company with over 250 artists. So Fireman Sam's witnessed the development of Xing Xing and also it's helped the artists improve their skills along with the production of the show.

After that, the studio enjoys the happiness from the success of this project with laughter and cheers looking forward to a wonderful future.

we should be asking them what lead to them choosing that particular graphic and where they got it from in order to ascertain whether it was possible to have been picked randomly or if they knew what they were doing.

I was at the Mushwara last Saturday and something was discussed.

It was discussed that in the fast moving world, Mushwara needs to be done and a response formulated from the Wifaqul Ulama Public Affairs Team. This will take time, effort and deliberation. Sometimes two issues will clash.

  1. There will be times when team will overreact.
  2. There will be times when team will not react
  3. There will be times when team will chose not to react.

Laymen will just see a lack of reaction on certain matters and point it out that Wifaqul Ulama didn’t react to XYZ, at other times laymen will point out that Wifaqul Ulama reacted too quickly.

The scoping of what the Team will react to and not react to is being done. In the background the new website is being created and new head of Public Affairs will be making his policies public soon.

All in all, no matter what is done there will always be issues which will be missed, under or over emphasised. Organisations with million Dollar budgets have these issue, let alone Volunteers.

Such is life.

Hope is to get better and better under the new leadership structure.

Fireman Sam Fiasco.

Support this action - send an email.

Xing Xing are the animation team responsible for producing the fireman Sam episode where a character steps on a page of the holy Quran.

There hasn't been enough media coverage or action to show just how distressing this is.

I would like to request that everyone that has access to email send the following email to the animators in question.

Simply copy and paste, and post the email to :

zhaopin@xing-xing. com

Here is the email:

FAO : senior directors, chief executives at Xing Xing.

I am writing in relation to the recent fiasco regarding the animated fireman Sam scene in which a character appears to stand on a page of the holy Quran which is regarded as a holy scripture held in extremely high regard by billions of Muslims across the world.

I would firstly like to draw your attention to this news clip :

Australian TV host Karl Stefanovic sorry for 'ignorant' jokes (Google this and include link)

In this clip, an Australian TV host apologised unreservedly for making a joke, ignorantly which has insulted a large population of people. This apology deserves recognition as it is honest as the host admits ignorance - and his mistake. This is admirable.

Xing Xing got it wrong. However, I do not feel Xing Xing have done enough to show the billions of Muslims across the world that they acknowledge just how insulting this animation is.

As a viewer of channel 5, and as a fan of Fireman Sam which provides good educational content to my children, I feel Xing Xing should do more to send a clear message to Muslims across the world.

I would also like to add that the Australian TV presenter made a joke, out of ignorance whereas, the animator in question, in your organisation that was responsible for putting this particular fireman Sam scene together, has purposely chosen a script of a holy book held in high regard by billions of people. This cannot be out of ignorance or by mistake. This is a clear, purposeful and planned script which has taken place and I feel it is necessary for a more detailed explanation and clarification of actions your company has taken regarding the animator in question and the process in which this was allowed to happen. I feel that your organisation should follow the example like that of the Australian TV presenter to come out with an apology and acknowledgement of what they have done.

I look forward to your reply.
