Makkah Residence
mixed-use complex project set in 2016

Anjum Hotel Makkah strategic partner at TIM 2015

Thursday, 26 March 2015

JEDDAH — Anjum Hotel Makkah has revealed its participation as a strategic partner for the eighth edition of the Saudi Travel and Tourism Investment Market (STTIM), one of the leading tourism projects approved by the National Tourism Strategy and implemented by the Saudi Commission for tourism and Antiquities (SCTA), which will be held on March 29 to April 3, 2015 at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Held under the patronage of Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, Governor of Riyadh Province, the event continues to serve as a strategic platform that looks toward providing participants with direct and quick-access to decision makers in the Saudi tourism segment. The show also serves as a strategic platform in promoting the entry of more tourism-based investments into the country, thereby reinforcing its position as a premier travel destination for the region.

During their participation, the Anjum Hotels Saudi hospitality brand will be throwing the spotlight on its current offering of its flagship hotel, Anjum Hotel Makkah, with its 1,743 rooms and suites to potential business partners like travel agencies, tourism organizations and government-based tourism agencies. Only opened recently, the hotel is fast gaining a reputation for providing clients and guests with world class services and facilities during their stay.

Yousef Abdul Latif Jameel, General Manager, Abdul Latif Jameel Real Estate Investment Company (ALJREIC), owner of the Anjum Hotels brand and the lead developer of the Jabal Al Kaaba project in Makkah, said “STTIM throws the spotlight on the best opportunities for development and investment in the tourism segment — allowing exhibitors to showcase and share information about their products and services. We are partnering with SCTA in this event to help increase awareness about our hospitality development projects and our flagship hotel, Anjum Hotel Makkah. At the same time, the event serves as the best place for our hotel representatives to meet with potential new clients and promote our key packages. All in all, being present at this industry leading show gives us the advantage of exploring new pathways and developments.” Over the last eight years, the show has acquired great interest and importance in the tourism industry —largely contributing to its development and enhancement. In line with this, the Anjum Hotels’ participation reflects the company’s continued support and commitment to the country’s rapidly developing tourism segment. The brand’s flagship, Anjum Hotel Makkah, is part of the first phase of the ALJREIC Jabal Al Kaaba project that was completed last year.

Jameel added, “The Jabal Al Kaaba project has several important stages of growth that are all based around the very heart of Islam’s holiest sites. Already completed, Phase 1 of this ground-breaking development saw the construction of the Anjum Hotel Makkah, a landmark 5-star facility designed and built specifically to accommodate those making their annual pilgrimage to the Grand Mosque. The project will be continuing to complete all phases, which will include the addition of 5,528 guest rooms and nearly 530,000 sq m of total construction with a capacity to accommodate 22,000 guests during Hajj; 14,000 guests during Ramadan and 8,300 during Umrah period.”

Makkah Residence development project

He disclosed that “in addition to the Jabal Al Kaaba project, which will be managed by our brand, Anjum, Yousef Abdul Latif Jameel Group will be developing the Makkah Residence development project, a large mixed-use residential village complex in three phases located 2.7 km from the Grand Mosque in Makkah. We will be constructing a large-scale complex of multistory and multifamily residential units offering 10,500 rooms. The project will offer retail, dining outlets, food courts facilities, in addition to social and service communities including clinics, mosques, prayer rooms, wedding halls, gardens, parking lots and many others. We have scheduled to commence with this project in 2016. These projects will both be managed under the Anjum brand.”

Last year’s edition resulted in an increase in tourism based investments, which has helped drive in significant growth for the industry. Organizers of the show have shared that STTIM and other tourism exhibitions and conferences have played a vital role in highlighting Saudi Arabia’s position as a premier tourism destination for the region and the rest of the world.

“Participating at STTIM will also allow us to update everyone with our new hospitality offerings. We are looking forward to exchanging knowledge and best practices with other participants—discussing the timely challenges of the industry and developing key solutions that can lead to more growth and development for the country’s tourism industry,” Jameel noted.

Medina Airport

GMW Architects

GMW Architects International, working with URS and a number of Turkish engineering consultants, has developed the master plan for Medina Airport’s expansion over three phases. Phase 1 is now complete and consists of a new terminal and pier, together with associated facilities designed to handle eight million passengers a year, expected by 2023.

Medina Airport is a convenient point of entry to Saudi Arabia for visitors to the country’s important religious sites and it currently receives more than one million Hajj pilgrims and around four million Umrah travellers a year. These figures are expected to increase significantly in coming years.

The initial master plan for the airport’s development to accommodate these numbers was prepared by Dorsch for GACA, who then invited international consortia of investors and operators to develop the master plan and design the new airport facilities. The intention is that three phases of development, when complete in 2037, will provide facilities with an annual capacity of 16 million passengers.

The first phase of development incorporates a terminal and pier, extensive airfield work including the expansion and rehabilitation of two existing runways, new taxiways and apron for 18 contact stands, and 20 remote stands capable of accommodating Code F aircraft.

The modular design of the 150,000m2 terminal building includes the capacity for an initial increase in passenger numbers to eight million and allows for further expansion without compromising the terminal’s operation.

A large Hajj Plaza sits opposite the new terminal and has six air-conditioned pavilions designed as holding areas for Hajj passengers. The pavilions will relieve pressure on the terminal and regulate passenger flow at peak times. Landside infrastructure includes a new road network, car parks, utility buildings, a mosque, ARFF, housing complex for airport employees and other aviation buildings.

Construction of the first phase completed at the end of 2014 and the initial commercial flights are expected in March 2015. The project team paid particular attention to the environmental impact and sustainability aspects of the development and are delighted that the project has recently achieved Gold certification under the LEED for New Construction Rating System.

Medina Airport Hotel

GMW Architects

This new hotel is part of the Phase 1 development of the airport and will be a 222-room, four-star facility serving Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz International Airport. It will provide 206 standard guest rooms, 38 of which will have interconnecting doors for families, together with 16 Suites.

The seven-storey hotel will be a modern, welcoming environment for business travellers, aircraft crew and possibly tourists on a short visit to Medina. Its site is within easy walking access of the airport terminal and clearly visible from the main airport road next to the public car park.

The buildings orientation is such that guest rooms face either north or south, which will reduce solar gain and, therefore, running costs. The building plan also safeguards the potential for expansion at ground level and additional car parking.

The design responds to the harsh climate of the region and the specific acoustic environment of the airport. Facades are designed to reduce the effects of the sun whilst allowing high levels of natural light into, and views out of, the interior. The use of double-glazed low E safety glass windows and glass-faced cladding panels enables the external surfaces of the building to be safely and effectively cleaned and maintained.

Public facilities will include an all-day restaurant capable of holding special functions and a cafe/lounge. Sliding doors will allow for external dining in the evening when the weather permits. The design provides for limited future expansion at ground level to enlarge the restaurant. The main kitchen is located to the rear close to the service core, which will allow direct access to the upper guest room levels for room service. The service core will also be used for luggage and linen delivery to all upper levels.

There will be a dedicated business centre incorporating four meeting rooms, with sliding/folding partitions that can create larger conference facility should it be required. The hotel administration offices and washroom facilities are placed next to the main circulation core with a direct link to the reception area and front-of-house offices at ground floor.

Facilities on upper floors include a small gym with changing/shower facilities, an aircrew lounge, hotel staff dining room and an executive lounge.

Lunar research chair to be renamed

The Makkah Clock Tower

Tuesday 31 March 2015

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman has approved the naming of the Islamic Crescent Observation and Moon Research Chair at King Abdul Aziz University after the late King Abdullah.

The Bin Ladin Group will provide SR39,330,500 for the chair. A team of consultants, scientists and local and international astronomy analysts will supervise it.

The chair represents one of the important extensions of the care and attention the late king paid to establish an international Islamic calendar based on the observation of the moon.

The role of the scientific chair is to define, publish and specify the time with utmost accuracy through the center.

It also aims to explain the time link between the sun and the moon which represent the two basic elements in defining the mechanism of timing using the astronomical system.

The chair will focus on conducting scientific and pragmatic researches from the highest point in Makkah at the iconic Makkah Clock Tower, where the headquarters of the chair is located.

About 13 observatories will be established to conduct scientific and astronomical researches, of which seven will be outside the Kingdom and six in different parts of the country.

More pilgrims flock to Madinah to receive blessings after their spiritual journey started with Umrah at Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah. The Prophet’s Mosque is one of the first destinations Madinah visitors seek to pay their salutations upon the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Arab News followed some pilgrims in Madinah and listened to their feedback about the visits. Iraqi pilgrim Abdul Rahim Abdul Ghani was standing at Al-Rumah Mountain at Uhud site when he told Arab News about his story. This is Abdul Ghani’s eleventh visit to the Kingdom in the course of a decade. Since 2005, he comes almost once a year to perform Umrah and Haj and says he feels the development every time he comes.

He said that the expansion projects of the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah are outstanding, “We witnessed several developments in the Kingdom including Al-Mashaer railway project, the Haramain High Speed Rail as well as the airpower expansion projects,” he said. Abdul Ghani praised the decisions to hire more employees dedicated for the comfort of pilgrims, “The Kingdom is helping make the pilgrims’ journey a very smooth one.”

He added that the pilgrim feels the growing levels of care and development in every place they go in the Kingdom, “From Al-Rumah mountain I can see Madinah. I can see the fancy hotels and malls and broad streets,” he said.
Abdul Ghani concluded the interview by wishing Saudis all good and hoped that God would protect the Kingdom from any harm.

From Makkah to Madinah

31 Mars 2015

A new book uses GPS and GIS to trace the Prophet Muhammad’s route from Makkah to Madinah with increased accuracy

When the Prophet Muhammad fled persecution in Makkah he faced many obstacles in his search for safety at the city of Madinah.

From Makkah to Madinah, traces the journey, known as the Hijrah or migration, which became the start date for the Islamic calendar in the year 622 CE.

A Saudi geographer, Dr Abdullah Alkadi, has followed the Hijrah route in precise detail using GPS and GIS mapping technology. Working with an old friend, photographer Peter Sanders, the route has also been documented in photographs.

‘The most important thing in locating the exact route is finding the exact origin,’ says Alkadi. ‘I needed to see people from the original area, which means [people] who lived in those places and were born in those places. That would make sure that when I asked for certain information about landmarks for valleys, I would be able to get answers about those places.’

He found many people on the route still living traditional lives and sought out elders to find out what had been passed down about the Hijrah in lore.

‘I tried to find people who were as old as possible because they would have more information and would not be affected by technology and modernism,’ says Alkadi.

‘I discovered buildings, settlements, calligraphy and drawing on stones and rocks. People, when they travelled, tried to prove their presence by drawing or writing and those writings and drawings can be traced back to a thousand years or more,’ he adds.

While he made several archaeological finds on his journey, Alkadi’s most significant discoveries were ancient milestones.

‘In Muslim, Arab and other histories there is not agreement over the exact distance of a mile. When I came to working out the exact distance, the milestone markers helped me a lot to discover new locations and distances,’ says Alkadi.

‘The idea of the milestones goes back to the Greeks,’ he says. Alkadi compared the shapes with other examples from the Milestone Society in Cardiff. ‘You are dealing with human beings so you have the same thing. They were almost identical until machines were introduced,’ he says. The oldest milestone Alkadi found on his journey was traced back 1,300 years. Alkadi combined the milestones with statistical methods to predict where he would find the next one.

What kept Alkadi motivated was the quest for the truth, and providing a reliable account of the Hijrah. The journey was not without hardship though. ‘There were places where we got lost or where a snake came over my feet, or where there were wolves and foxes,’ says Alkadi. ‘Honestly, there were friends who travelled with me who think I’m crazy. Now my wife would see the pictures and she got mad at me: “Why am I doing that?”’
