Coca Cola recipe 'discovered'
A website claims to have uncovered Coca-Cola's top secret recipe.

Coca-Cola's top secret recipe has allegedly been revealed

By Barney Henderson 12:53AM GMT 15 Feb 2011

The ingredients of the drink, created by John Pemberton, a medicinal pharmacist in 1886, have always been a mystery.

However, Thisamericanlife.org claims to have discovered a list in a photograph in a newspaper article giving the ingredients and exact quantities to make the drink.

The Feb 8 1979 edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a photo of someone holding open a book with a recipe claimed to be an exact replica of Pemberton's.

The recipe reportedly contains the exact measures of all the different oils needed for Coca Cola's secret ingredient, Merchandise 7X.

Despite making up only one per cent of the drink's total formula, Merchandise 7X is thought to give the popular soft drink its unique taste

The 'secret recipe'

Fluid extract of Coca 3 drams USP

Citric acid 3 oz

Caffeine 1oz

Sugar 30 (it is unclear from the markings what quantity is required)

Water 2.5 gal

Lime juice 2 pints 1 qrt

Vanilla 1oz

Caramel 1.5oz or more to colour

7X flavour (use 2oz of flavour to 5 gals syrup):

Alcohol 8oz

Orange oil 20 drops

Lemon oil 30 drops

Nutmeg oil 10 drops

Coriander 5 drops

Neroli 10 drops

Cinnamon 10 drops

Not that I drink coke but there is nothing here to prove coke actually has alcohol. One is a claim that they have found the recepie and another is facts. Secondly, they talk about a recipe from 1979 and, as we all know, recipes change. Unfortunately some people just having it in for someone and in order to prove a point, they will use the flimsiest of evidence (hearsay in this case).

salam All a brother sent me this.

Abstract: Coca Cola doesn't contain Alcohol nor is fermentation used in the process so it isn't Haram. However, it isn't healthy so should be avoided as much as possible on health grounds : -)

Background: Every few years rumours start within the Muslim community about the presence of Alcohol or Pigs blood or some other "Haram" ingredient and then juicy gossip and discussions start within the Muslim circles.

We (as Muslims) are supposed to follow the Qur'aan & Sunnah in evaluating and Authenticating news BEFORE spreading it further as clearly stated in the Qur'aan:

[49:6] O you who believe, if a sinful person brings you a report, verify its correctness, lest you should harm a people out of ignorance, and then become remorseful on what you did.

Muslims vs Non-Muslim way of dealing with news: You will find that most Muslims have no idea who broke the news, are unable to research the primary source, at best they quote the secondary or even tertiary source in their text messages or email OR sometimes none at all!

In other words the Qur'aanic injunction of "verifying the Authenticity of news" is ignored to get some cheap laughs and giggles!

Origins of Coca-Cola Alcohol Issue: The story of Coca cola containing Alcohol first appeared on page 2B on February the 18th, 1979, in "Atlanta Journal-Constitution" in an article received little attention at the time. They also published a photograph of hand-written copy of John Pemberton's original recipe.

This newspaper is still in print and they admitted that they broke the news in 1979!

www.ajc.com/news/a-claim-to-cokes-839780.html?cxtype=rss_...

American Life picks up the 1979 story in 2011: American Life picked up the story on the 2nd of February 2011 and here is the print in which they admit to the 1979 story and acknowledge the original source:

www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/427/origi...

Something for a Muslim to think about? Yes, that they should investigate matters before spreading them...Also consider:

1. The authenticity of the photograph is still dubious, consider the following points:

a. Document expert John Reznikoff, who came into possession of some materials

which-if authentic-would change history.

2. Even if proven "Authentic" this would be the "original recipe" and not what is used today

Confirmed statement: Fortunately, Islam doesn't rely on sensationalism rather than cold hard facts and here they are from Coca-Cola:

www.thecoca-colacompany.com/contactus/myths_rumors/produc...

In the manufacture of Coca-Cola, alcohol is not added as an ingredient and no fermentation takes place.

Gas Chromatgoraphy detected on Alcohol in Coke/Pepsi & 7-UP!

http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/showthread.php?70174-Gc-instrument-did-not-detect-alcohol-in-coca-cola-pepsi-amp-7-up&p=588129&viewfull=1#post588129

Although Br Syed Rasheeduddin Ahmed disagrees with Ulama of Deoband on the "Fatwa on Alcohol", nevertheless his research is used by our respected and beloved Shaykh (Mufti) Taqi Usmani (HA) in book "Ahkamul-Dhabihi" and the Gas Chromatgoraphy tests are independent.

"The only" Scholar in the whole world who believes in the Alcohol in Coca-Cola theory is Mufti Desai (HA) from Al-Majlis in South Africa and frankly...

THEORY!!!

If one does tests on pure Apple juice, eventually there will be some kind of Alcohol in there too.

Pepsi for me, yes its bad for me, but if I give it up, I can pass on the savings to Muftisays Magazine, Nice clean halal read.

Eat HALAL, Drink HALAL, Read HALAL, Do HALAL.

Asslamo Allaikum,

Absolutely!

I had a discussion with a Salafi Scholar in Saudia who was criticising Hanafi position on Alcohol so I asked him, "Do you eat Khubz (bread) from the Market?"

And he said, "Yes"

So I told him to quit ingesting Alcohol because "YEAST" is using in baked bread which converts Sugar into Alcohol so comon Khubz (bread) in Saudi Arabia has Alcohol in it!

:- ) And I told him to check this with a "Salafi Chemist" if he doesn't trust me... :-)

And there are many examples like it which shows the validity of Hanafi Madhab on Alcohol.
