When the news came, We thought that all onboard are shaheeds. And it fell on a busy residential area. So there was expectation of large casualty figure on ground. Relatively it is less in number.
May Allah grant all the shaheed a high rank in Jannah.
The plane was merely seconds away from the runway. Could have easily been diverted to crash into the open spaces of the runway. Looks like the pilot erred big time.
Also, just a few seconds prior to it crashing the plane would have been flying over my locality. Second time now that a plane has crashed so close to my area. The previous time a small military plane crashed into an under construction house, so no loss on the ground. This time it was a heavily populated area though. Very heartbreaking to watch the videos that have been uploaded of the scene there.
Theory is circulating about the possibility of either pilot forgetting to deploy landing gear (which sounds very absurd as he had 17000 hours of experience so this is very far fetched) and then landed which destroyed the engines or landing gear was deployed but not locked hence when aircraft landed, it collapsed and then pilot decided for a go around but engines gave out as they were damaged. Bird strike is also a possibility.
Final Moments....charring visible under engines, RAT deployed
Yesterday the CAA conducted a runway inspection at Karachi shortly after the crash, and found that the Left Engine left scrape marks at 4500, from the start of the runway, Right engine at 5500 feet the from runway’s start.
Both engines left a trail 1000 feet long from 6-7000 feet from runway start.
Cockpit crew had not informed ATC about Engine issues.
Afterwards in the go around they barely made it 2000 feet, while they were ordered to climb and maintain 3000.
One thing is now clear that engines were damaged due to them touching the ground when plane tried to land the first time. Also confirmed by one of the survivor who says the same thing here.
The altitude graph of PIA PK8303 for the last ten minutes of the flight, based on Flightradar24 data.
In comparison to a typical A320 approach to Karachi, PK8303 seems to have been relatively high on the first attempt.
Even if the plane had circled around back to the airport by making a right turn instead of a left one, the damage on the ground would have been less. Since a right turn would have taken the plane over the relatively less densely populated localities near the highway.
Nevertheless, preliminary reports suggest that the pilot did try to avoid the houses by guiding the plane onto the street between the houses. The front of many houses still got crushed but I think major casualties on the ground were avoided.
In the end we can speculate all we want, but there is only one thing that matters and that is the Will of Allah. Hazrat Israel عليه السلام had his Orders to collect the souls of these people on so and so street of Model Colony, Karachi, and he did exactly that.
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
