salam

i thought i had made a thread on this before but cant seem to find it..iv recently been watching Ertugrul a turkish drama about a legend whos son became 1st ottoman caliph.

i used to be very anti tv but watchin this and umar series رضي الله عنه i must say i am very inpressed and thinl we need more.

now i maintain taqwa demands tv being avoided but lets face it most muslim households have a tv so if they got it might as well give them something worth watchin

im not gana lie despite going to talks from yooung age (9/10) and hearing so many stories about sahabah and our heroes nothing inspiired me more than these 2 dramas.

it contextualises evrything and visualises it where as books and talks feel more like just knowledge/reference of our history.

a big issue with us me we tend to have a defeatest and pasafist mentanlity but watchin ertugrul has given renewed hope for ummah. one guy standing against the oppressers and dealing with munafiq backstabbers over came all these obstacles. inshAllah we can do same. situation is bad in burma syria aqsa but im now convinced very soon a man will arise among us who cna unite us and help us defeat the zaalimoon

I Disagree with this idea 100%

To me, it is like blasphemy of some sort.

There may be benefits, but overall it is wrong.

Part of a lengthy answer

Why is it impermissible to acquire Deeni knowledge through viewing cartoons and films?

After closely examining the issue of acquiring knowledge through viewing cartoons and films which outwardly portray Islamic information, one will realise that this means of acquiring knowledge does not conform to the above mentioned Islamic method of acquiring Islamic knowledge. Furthermore, acquiring Islamic knowledge through this means is impermissible due to the following reasons:

This means of acquiring ‘ilm is impermissible in Shariah as it directly opposes the command of Allah Ta’ala and His Rasul (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had sounded severe warnings in his mubaarak Ahaadith for those who have any involvement in picture making. Hence propagating Islam via this means is impermissible.

إن أشد الناس عذابا عند الله يوم القيامة المصورون (صحيح البخاري 2/880 ، صحيح لمسلم 2/201)

Those involved in picture-making will be subjected to the worst forms of punishment on the day of Qiyaamat. (Bukhari 2/880, Muslim 2/201)

In many of these films, men and women are seen together. This opposes the law of Shariah in regard to segregation between na-mahram males and females. Hence, this type of enactment, instead of creating an Islamic effect, only destroys the fabric of Deen through inciting one towards sin.

The actors in these films are portraying illustrious personalities such as the Ambiyaa (Alayhimus Salaam) or Sahaabah (Radiyallahu Anhum), etc. This enactment is in itself deception, as the onlookers will begin to form their opinions of (Alayhimus Salaam) or Sahaabah (Radiyallahu Anhum) based on the actions of these sinful people. To add insult to injury, the film being videoed is impermissible in Islam. Hence, they are trying to propagate Deen through resorting to haraam in portraying the lives of these illustrious personalities.

Propagating Islam through this medium degrades the position of these illustrious personalities and reduces Deen to a thing of entertainment. Furthermore, this will lead to the masses beginning to regard these so called “Islamic movies” as a substitute to Hollywood and Bollywood movies.

Presently, the kuffaar are using this as a means to distort and adulterate the Deen of Islam. Muslims should not be so gullible as to fall into the traps and the nets of the kuffaar. It has been proven that many of these films shattered the Imaan and beliefs of many Muslims and created suspicions and doubts in their Deen.

Portraying these great personalities via cartoon characters causes great disrespect to these saintly personalities. How can Deen come alive in the Ummah when gross disrespect is shown to those who were responsible for bringing Deen alive in the world?

In reality, the outcome of such plays, films, cartoons etc. is making a mockery of the pure and exalted Deen of Allah Ta’ala and the illustrious men of Islam. Similarly, those who view these types of films will be viewed as supporters and promoters of this sin in the sight of Allah Ta’ala.

Lastly, the kitaabs of Aqaaid have recorded that if people enact a play for entertainment purposes where one person assumes the position of a great Aalim or Mufti, and people refer Deeni issues to him, and laugh at him and make a mockery of him, then on account of showing disrespect to Deen, all present will come out of the fold of Islam. Hence, the outcome of viewing these cartoons, films, etc. is extremely destructive and detrimental to one’s Imaan.

We make Duaa to Allah Ta’ala to bless the Ummah at large with the true love and respect for Deen and the symbols of Deen, and enable us to emulate the Mubaarak Sunnah of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) in our lives.

وَمَن يُعَظِّم شَعـئِرَ اللَّـهِ فَإِنَّها مِن تَقوَى القُلوبِ ﴿الحج: ٣٢﴾

From IslamQA
I had a disagreement with someone about the representation of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in movies and plays, as happens a great deal nowadays. He said that this serves an interest, calling people to Islam and spreading noble Islamic morals and attitudes. What is your opinion on this matter?

Published Date: 2002-01-01
Praise be to Allaah.
The Sahaabah have a high status in Islam, because they were the contemporaries of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him); they fulfilled the duty of supporting him and being loyal to him, and they strove for the sake of Allaah with their efforts, their wealth and their selves. Hence the scholars are agreed that they are the elite and the best of this ummah, and that Allaah gave them the honour of being the companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). He praised them in His Book when He said (interpretation of the meaning):

“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah. And those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and falling down prostrate (in prayer), seeking Bounty from Allaah and (His) Good Pleasure. The mark of them (i.e. of their Faith) is on their faces (foreheads) from the traces of prostration (during prayers)”[al-Fath 48:29]

And the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) praised them when he said: “The best of my ummah is my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them.” (al-Bukhaari, 3650; Muslim, 2535)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) warned against belittling them, mocking them or insulting them when he said: “Whoever insults my companions, the curse of Allaah, the angels and all of mankind will be upon him.” (al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 2340).

Portraying any one of them on stage or on the screen is contrary to this praise from Allaah, and is detrimental to the high status and honour which Allaah has bestowed upon them. That is because representing any one of them in this fashion exposes them to mockery and ridicule. Actors are usually people who have no room for righteousness, piety and Islamic morals in their lives. Moreover those who put on plays are doing that as a means to earn money, and no matter how much they try to avoid it, it will involve some lying and backbiting.

Representing the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) has an effect on their status in the hearts and minds of the Muslims, and paves the way for Muslims to doubt their religion. It also necessarily implies that one of the actors will play the role of Abu Jahl or one of his ilk among the kuffaar, and he will have to utter words insulting Bilaal, and insulting the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the message of Islam that he brought. Undoubtedly this is a great evil.

What is said about this serving the interest of calling people to Islam and spreading noble Islamic morals and etiquette is simply an assumption and wishful thinking. Whoever knows the real nature and aims of actors will realize that this kind of acting is in sharp contrast to the real nature of the actors and their audience.

One of the basic principles in Islamic sharee’ah is that if a matter both serves an interest and does some harm, if the bad outweighs the good then it is haraam. Representing the Sahaabah may serve some interest but the harm done by this is far greater than any good that might be achieved.

So in order to protect those interests and ward off the harm, and to preserve the honorable status of the companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), we must not allow that.

Based on the above, it is haraam to represent any of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in movies or plays etc.

And Allaah knows best. May Allaah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and all his family and companions.

A typical response from one of our Ulama - Another reason why I prefer detailed and referenced answers.

Quote:
Q474: Watching movies about Islamic Figures
Watching movies about Islamic Figures.
Question: in regards to the new Islaamic Movies, in which actors portray the lives of great Muslims of the past, like Imaam Ghazali, Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, sultan Salah-ud-deen Ayyubi, etc.
The purpose of these movies (according to the makers) is to teach the audience about these great figures.
Is it permissible to watch these movies?

Answer: This depends first and foremost on the material it contains and who made the movies. Most of the time the facts are not correct like the movie about the battle of Uhad. There are many discrepancies in there. It is better to read an authentic book rather than watching such stuff. However, it is of a lesser degree than watching other movies, fiction and drama

Q: Is it allowed to watch movies like ashaab-e-kahf, muktharnama, the message, oias karani etc?

(bism1)
A: The kitaabs of aqaaid have recorded that if people enact a play where one person assumes to be a great aalim or a mufti and people are referring to him for deeni issues and he is answering them then these kitaabs say that all of them have become kaafir.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

For the time being i have no comment regarding portraying actual deceased people in movies and cartoons.

Othet than that, I think they needs to be more quality cartoons/films made for children. Something that attracts their attention just like how all of the other cartoons and YouTube clips attract their attention and hold their interest. The content obviously has to be halal. The storyline does not always have to be 'directly Islamic' rather we need more general storylines, teaching them about science, nature, animals etc but at the same time having the characters stop their activities to go to the masjid, or to pray salah, say some duas in between, and display model Islamic behaviour while living a normal child's life.

E.g of the quality content I have seen are zaky series from Australia, the misri bunch and the Malaysian upin and ipin (can be improved).

The same for Islamic books. We need books with general storylines , but with the character taking a break and praying salah, reading duas etc.

All kids watch YouTube, and the quality of the videos with haram content is much better than what is out there with halal content. If they don't watch it at home, they are going to watch it by their cousin's, Or their friend, of by their molwisab's kid's house. If not they will be playing games.

Basically pick the lesser sinful of the two is what you are saying when the option of neither is still available. So it doesn't make sense.

I agree kids are on YouTube with their little tablets etc etc (just like my little one, and I regret it) but aren't we actually leaving the door wide open for them to be misled and misguided from day one.

They are on YouTube because we put them there. We see our 2 year old children using smart phones and tablets and smile thinking how inteligent they are! But in reality it's our lack of inteligence.

They are on YouTube because that is the next best dummy (pacifier) Just like TV is their baby sitter i.e. Shaytan is their baby sitter.

Children love stories. I tell my little one stories all the time, any story and for my kid, that is better than his tablet, games or toys.

You open the doors of fitnah now, they will be impossible to close later. Leave them shut and InshaAllah everything will fall into place.

It is only the lesser of two evils if you consider animations as haram. That is another topic to discuss.

If it is not animated, then it would be allowed the same way videos are allowed.

Of course you still have to monitor their usage of the devices.

There is no opening the doors of fitnah. Everyone has these devices. In the future it may be glasses, or some other technology not needing a device.

You can control how much u want at home, no one can/will be able to prevent their children from accessing the devices and technology outside of home. At school, at madrasah, outside of madrasah, at family at friends, In shops. Its not like a TV.

For e.g. I don't allow my kids to search for anything themselves, but other parents do, so how can I stop my kids from seeing someone else's kid search for their own stuff. Like I said even the molwisab's children might be searching.

How can you speak about leaving the doors shut when all kids are already watching not so perfect content on YouTube and playing games. There is no Door.

My two year old knows how to scroll through videos one by one, back and forth. Adverts pop up even when filters are put in place.
How do you know they aren't searching or they can't/wont search unless you are holding the device in your hand at all times.
[quote="Concerned"]Like I said even the molwisab's children might be searching.

Doesn't make it acceptable - sounds more like a cultish response :)

Tomorrow my children will say my Ustad was watching a movie on his phone - doesn't justify it.

Not all kids have tablets and so on. in fact many families won't even have a smart phone, and if they do, they won't have any data or WI-fi on it.
The door is in our wallets. We open the wallet and pay for the fitnah. Poorer nations/families don't have such wallets. Keep the wallet closed, leaves the door shut.

We won't know. Insha Allah someone comes up with a way to block porn from the ISP, and make people pay to access it or something.

I was told the kids in the villages in India have smartphones. Perhaps those in other parts of the world can speak of their situation. In any case internet is readily available where we are living, sometimes free Of cost.

I know a mufti who isn't into technology and initially did not have a smart phone. Now he sends me WhatsApp messages. Its the way communication is going. Soon there may be no phone.

Well, At least Steve Jobs (Founder of Apple) had more sense than we do, in the sense that he knew what he created and didn't allow his children to have the iPad etc. He knew about its addiction and what else it would lead to.

Just because it's the norm, it doesn't mean that we should follow. For many of us, it's too late, but there's still hope inshaAllah.
