We are shocked, horrified and outraged at the intentional murder of peaceful worshippers engaged in prayers near the Finsbury Park Mosque. Islington and Finsbury Park is one of the most vibrant, open and diverse communities in Britain if not in Europe and an attack on this community which has worked tirelessly to uproot extremism is particularly troubling.
Our heart goes to all those affected and we pray for them during this Holy month of Ramadhan. We stand with them, ready to assist, ready to share their burden and their grief.
This is not “potential terrorism”, it is Terrorism!
After the recent abhorrent and despicable attacks in Manchester and London, the Government and the Media quickly pointed to the need for Imams to do more and to tighten legislation. British Imams have been consistently highlighting the need for transformational action on Islamophobia and tackling all forms and manifestations of extremism and not just “Islamic extremism”. Imams are willing and ready to work with all parties to root out all forms of extremism.
Islamophobia and talks of hatred towards Muslims has become socially acceptable in Britain.
We need the British Government to take concrete steps to arrest this worrying development before it consumes more lives. British Muslims expect to see a definitive plan to tackle Islamophobia. Politicians and the Media need to dial down the rhetoric against Islam and Muslims which has become socially acceptable. In the meantime, we the British people will come together. We will #Standtogether, we will not be cowed, and we will not be defeated by Terrorism.
I am proud of my city and I know that this despicable attack will bring us ever closer.
