Salaam, I would like to discuss this trend of reciting the Quran at speed. Over the years there has been this style of reciting the Quran faster than what is allowed. There are Hadith against it, there are Quran verses which clearly state that the Quran should be recited in a certain manner. So why is it that we want to disobey Allah and his Prophet and mock the speech of Allah. Why do we want to take away the beauties of the Quran and turn it into a farce. Why are we letting people speak about our Tilawah. Why are we having congregations which specialise in this form if RACEitation. What's the rush for crying out load.
Please maintain respect for each other and Ulamaa (if topic is about a scholar) by avoiding accusations and slanderous comments. Also remember that in order for criticism to be constructive, it must be channeled in the right direction. If there is any doubt in a matter, it is better to ask, clarify or to remain silent rather than to speak ill of another person.
Surely your Lord knows that you pass in prayer nearly two-thirds of the night, and (sometimes) half of it, and (sometimes) a third of it, and (also) a party of those with you; and Allah measures the night and the day. He knows that you are not able to do it, so He has turned to you (mercifully), therefore read what is easy of the Quran. He knows that there must be among you sick, and others who travel in the land seeking of the bounty of Allah, and others who fight in Allah's way, therefore read as much of it as is easy (to you), and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate and offer to Allah a goodly gift, and whatever of good you send on beforehand for yourselves, you will find it with Allah; that is best and greatest in reward; and ask forgiveness of Allah; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
An important ettiquette of reciting the Qur'aan is never to rush through the recitation, and to recite it with tajweed. Tajweed cannot be seperated from the Qur'aan and if it is, the true reality of the Qur'aan will be lost. In fact,the person who recites the Qur'aan without Tajweed will be a sinner.It is with reference to such people that Rasullullaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) mentioned, "There are many people who recite the Qur'aan while the Qur'aan curses them."
Imaam Jazari (rahmatullaahi 'alaih) writes, "It is incumbent to adopt Tajweed because the one who does not will be sinful since it was with Tajweed that the Qur'aan was revealed and with Tajweed was it conveyed to us."
It is therefore incumbent to recite the Qur'aan as it was conveyed to us. (Fataawaa Raheemiyyah)
I was around 7 years old that I first remember going for Taraaweeh Salaah. 'Isha Salaah was normal as usual but I noticed a difference. There were a lot more people today that normally at 'Isha. What was it that brought so many people today and not yesterday? Was 'Isha Salaah not that important yesterday as it is today?
I never remember the Imam getting up a second time to lead Salaah so shortly after the Fardh. But yes, it's true, there's another congregational prayer. I didn't know what to do. We kids were at the back and I was stood next to my friend. The Taraaweeh commenced, the Imaam started to pray....... and I cracked up. I laughed as though I heard a really funny joke. My friend laughed after me although he was the one who always made me want to pray seriously.
'Isha Salaah was prayed at normal pace, beautiful in recitation and pleasant to the ears. Then Taraaweeh started and a sudden burst of pace. I hardly recognized Surah Fatihah. For so long I thought that this is what Taraaweeh was. As kids, when playing at home, you often imitate or role-play with brothers and sisters. Whether it's teacher and student, uncles and aunties, sports athletes or an Imam, you copy what you see and believe it to be the proper method.
Once at home, I gimmicked leading Taraaweeh and you can imagine how I did this? I constantly said random half syllables as fast as I can till it sounded like I've been possessed by something supernatural. This is what I thought Taraaweeh was.
Alhamdulillah Allah gave me enough knowledge and understanding to respect the Qur'aan as I grew up and love it dearly. I love it more dearly now when I realised that memorizing it is a gift from Allah and it's not bestowed on everyone. I am one of those it was not blessed to.
But after listening to what some Huffaaz (those who know the Qur'aan from memory) have made of the Qur'aan in Taraaweeh, I feel more blessed knowing I have done more justice to the Qur'aan than they have.
During the entire month of Ramadhan, if I sat to recite the Qur'aan after every Salaah and by the end of the 30 days only completed 3 lines properly in its original dignified way, I would be satisfied. But if I completed 10 full Qur'aan and read it like I was being chased by a gang of ferocious wild apes and had to get away, it would never be satisfying.
How can we let this happen? My good Mufti friend lead Salaah in North London a few years ago and I went to listen to him. I praised him for reciting the way it should be and he told me how he was getting constant grief from the elders at the Masjid and in the committee to read fast. The way I understood it is, "Please stop reading properly and read it like a maniac so we can go home."
The worst I've ever heard is an atrocity of an attempt to complete the Qur'aan in one night. It started of extremely fast but I could make out the words just about. But some pages into the attempt to complete the Qur'aan in one night, it was not recitation, it was not even reading, it was a joke. They tried to justify it by stating that the Aslaaf completed one Qur'aan every night.
How do you expect Allah سبحانه وتعالى to put Barakah in your time when you disgrace his words with what you call Tilaawah? My local Qari recites each and every word properly and recites beautifully, many don't like it. I have literally heard people around me sighing heavily when he gets up in the 13h Rak'aat to begin his 8 Rak'aat when he says "Allahu Akbar". But I feel like I've prayed Salaah and not just done exercise. Still, at the end of the month, he cries in his Du'aa that his Tilaawah be accepted.
When I heard the extreme attempt of recitation to complete the Qur'aan, it reminded me of Hindu pundits doing their prayers. It also sounded scary as any non-Muslim would think black magic is being performed because it was NOT Qur'aan recitation.
When I hear the Taraaweeh nowadays, it brings the following Hadeeth to life:
Sayyiduna Ubada bin Saamit narrates that the Merciful Prophet said, 'The one who does Wudhu well and then stands for Salaah and completes the ruku', sujood and recitation, his Salaah says, 'May Allah protect you the way you have protected me'. The Salaah is then elevated to the sky and it sparkles with light. The gates of the skies are opened for it so it reaches the court of Allah and then it intercedes for the one who prayed it. But if he does not do ruku', sujood and recite well then it says, 'May Allah abandon you the way you have ruined me'. That Salaah is then taken to the skies and is shadowed by darkness. The gates of the skies are closed for it. It is then folded up like an old piece of cloth and thrown onto the persons face'. (Kanz-ul-Ummal, V7, P129, Hadith 19049)
When the Sahaabah recited the Qur'aan, the enemies would hide and listen. Some would accept Islam and some would end up in tears and offer them protection. When you hear the Qur'aan today, it makes you want to hide and stay hidden. When a non-Muslim hears it, they mimic it the way they mimic Indians. The Qur'aan was such that it wasn't possible to mimic and ridicule. Now there's no need to ridicule it because the Huffaaz ridicule the Qur'aan for them in Taraaweeh.
To recite the Qur'aan with Tajweed is compulsory. To commit major mistakes in the recitation of the words of Allah, one is sinful. Do the Masaajid who allow this not fear a month of sins in the name of Taraaweeh?
If you know a Masjid that performs Taraaweeh more proper than the Masjid closer to you, it would be incorrect to go to the closer one without a strong reason.
This is not aimed at any individual or any specific Masjid. The sad truth is, most of our Masaajid are in this state except for a handful along with the Arabs.
I am hoping that members can offer solutions to get this through to the Masaajid.

SubhanAllah, Maulana what a state we are in. Daywalk3r, this is the same situation we are in with the moon debate.
This is an issue Deoband has to see to. It is a sad state when we make comments like I follow these ulama because they have taqwa. Only Allah can be a judge of this. Having extreme knowledge does not make us the "Muttaqun".
We have been deceived and duped.
My salafi friends say they'd rather do 8 rakats with the Quran being recited from the soul.
How can we argue with them.
Taraweeh/Tahajjud had become an act. An act to impress, an act to satisfy the weak.

I'm not one to swear, nor get angry, and those who know me are my witnesses, but I don't know how else to vent my anger. We are laymen trying to stick to the right path, the scholars who should show us the right path are walking down hill and taking us with them.
A few of the salaf who have completed the Quran in Salah.
Kharija lbn Mus'ab has stated that 4 religious leaders have completed the recitation of the entire Qur'an in one rakaah of salaah alone. Uthmaan Ibn Affaan (RA.), Tameen Daari (RA.), Sa'eed Ibn Jubair (R. A.) and Imaam Abu Hanifah (R. A.).
Now does anyone in their right mind accept that these people would disobey even an atoms weight of the Quran.
Or does everyone accept that Allah had blessed them with barakah and their own miracle. Would Allah not lengthen the night for them. I don't think anyone would believe that these and other salaf would even dare mock the Quran.
The evidence used by these people is flawed.
Once again we have been made fools of. No wonder the salafi have a strong hand over our youngsters.
Our scholars have "Fluffed it" (A term i picked up with some great friends)
(23:1) Most certainly those Believers have attained true success.
الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ
(23:2) who perform their Salat with humility:*
* Khashi`un in the Text is from khushu (to bow down, to express humility) which is a condition of the heart as well as of the body. Khushu' of the heart is to fear and stand in awe of a powerful person, and khushu ` of the body is to bow one's head and lower one's gaze and voice in his presence. In Salat one is required to show khushu ` both of the heart and of the body, and this is the essence of the Prayer. It has been reported that when the Holy Prophet once saw a person offering his Prayer as well as playing with his beard, he remarked: "Had he khushu ` in his heart, his body would have manifested it. "
Though khushu ` is actually a condition of the heart, as stated by the above tradition, it is manifested by the body as a matter of course. The Shari `ah has enjoined certain etiquette which, on the one hand, helps produce khushu ` in the heart, and on the other, helps sustain the physical act of the Prayer in spite of the fluctuating condition of the heart. According to this etiquette, one should neither turn to the right or left, nor raise one's head to look up: one may, however, look around from the corner of the eye, but as far as possible, one must fix the gaze on the place where the forehead would rest in prostration; one is also forbidden to shift about, incline side ways, fold the garments or shake off dust from them. It is also forbidden that while going down for prostration, one should clean the place where one would sit or perform prostration. Similarly it is disrespectful that one should stand stuffy erect, recite the verses of the Qur'an in a loud resounding voice, or sing them, or belch or yawn repeatedly and noisily. It has also not been approved that one should offer the Prayer in a hurry. The injunction is that each article of the Prayer should be performed in perfect peace and tranquillity, and unless one article has been completely performed, the next should not be begun. If one feels hurt by something during the Prayer, one may cast it aside by one hand, but moving the hand repeatedly or using both the hands for the purpose is prohibited.
