Asslamo Allaikum,
I am told on good Authority that “in Muslim India” it was normal for Muslim women from good and noble families to be fluent in at least 3 separate languages (reading, writing & speech)
All the education was done at home. When the Muslim rule in India came to an end, the education standards of the Muslim women declined to such an extent that Shaykh (Maulana) Ashraf Ali Thanwi (RA) had to write “Bahishti Zewar”.
For over 800 years there was no “Bahishti Zewar” equivalent so that tells you all you need to know about languages and education of the past.
When decline occurs in women, generations suffer!
The point of this...
Absolutely, Muslims should master as many languages as possible BUT with priority given to languages which will assist in their Deen. So if someone has the mother tongue of "Marathi" then although its good to know it but it won't be of as much benefit to them as Arabic or Urdu etc.
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
