Salaam,

I am new to Islam and have only just now read The Holy Quar'an.
I have never before understood that it is truly a religion of peace and was under many false impressions.
I believe I have a clear understanding of the text (as it was translated into English), but I have many questions regarding how Islam is actually practiced.

My first question is about the many different sects of Islam. I guess I don't realize how there can be so many different interpretations of the Holy Book. (If this is not so, I offer my humble apologies. I don't understand all the various sects.)

Salaam

I think it's best if you contact a scholar from your locality. If you post your general location or message the mods, we will find someone near you.

I think we can help on general information like this. For example, how different sects emerged.

I was originally raised to be a Catholic. For many years I have suffered a crisis of faith.
I felt like I was missing something.

I live in Texas and have no Mosques anywhere close to me. I would certainly welcome contact with anyone with knowledge.

I guess my main question regarding the sects amounts to: Which is the closest to the true interpretation?

I apologise if anyone is offended by this question. From an outsiders point of view, it is indeed very confusing.

I still consider myself to be an outsider. Simply because the only true knowledge of Islam comes from the reading of The Holy Quar'an. I realize I still have much to learn.

What are you talking about man? Texas has plenty of Mosques and places. I am also from the South and got family in Texas, message me your city and I will try to hook you up.

Any ways, back to business.

What is Sect?

Sect is something which is fundamentally different in creed, for example Catholicism and Jehovah's Witness are Sects of Christianity because they differ in creed and belief.

In Islam, the disagreements in practise i.e. someone tying the hands in prayers vs someone keeping them on the sides are not sects because they do not differ in creed.

The basic and founding principle in Islam is:

There is NONE worthy of worship except God and Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) is the Messenger of God.

Anyone who believes in this, isn't a sect. In your setting and context (in Texas) the only sect relevant is someone who DOES NOT fall in this umbrella would probably be twelver-Shias, most common (extreme Shias).

So which particular "sect" in Islam are you specifically referring to?

At this point, my recommendation for you would be to:

  1. Download Kindle App
  2. Read Qur'aan made easy which is FREE on Kindle

I guess I'm mainly confuse about Sunni as compared to Shia. Although I admit I know little about either one.

Sorry, I have another question.

Are the Sunnah and Sharia law a part of all Islam or do they refer to specific (groups or sects)?

Again, I apologize for my ignorance.

I'm continuously searching the internet trying to gather my information, but sometimes I can't seem to find a definite answer to my questions.

Shariah: Islamic Law

Shariah is basically the rules and regulations of Islam. These are basically dos and don't s of Islam in simplistic terms i.e. it is permissible to eat chicken but not permissible to eat pork. In US, there are issues with "Shariah Law" but it is nothing but rules and regulations pertaining to your personal life, there is no such as a "Muslim Court" or a "Muslim Judge" sitting around and pronouncing judgements in Louisiana etc.

This has 3 sources and you adopt rulings in this order.

Qur'aan-First & Primary Source: Whatever the Qur'aan states is primary and primary, for example God is ONE

Loading Qur'aan Verse

Sunnah-Secondary Source: These are the sayings, actions and (approvals) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him), for example Islam has 5 pillars

Quote:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Islam is built upon five: to worship Allah and to disbelieve in what is worshiped besides him, to establish prayer, to give charity, to perform Hajj pilgrimage to the house, and to fast the month of Ramadan.”

Ijma (Consensus)-Tertiary Source: These are agreed upon opinions of the first 3 generations of Islam

Qiyas (Deduction): When a new issues occurs for which there is no example in the first 3 source then deduction is made for example is blood transfusion permissible or impermissible for Muslims? You have to resort to deductive analysis because technology did not exist previously.

Thank you for the additional information.
Are there books available regarding the Sunnah's? (Other than the Qur'aan obviously)

Sure, copy that. This book is called "Riyadus-Saliheen", feel free to download and click on any chapter to read.

www.central-mosque.com/index.php/Hadeeth/riyadh-as-saalih...

But before doing that, lets get some basics down. I have written this entire section with the help of other Muslims as a starting point.

www.central-mosque.com/index.php/Table/Islam/

Belief/Creed:

www.central-mosque.com/index.php/Islam/what-do-i-have-to-...

There are 7 things which need to believe in to be a Muslim and they are as follows:

  1. I believe in Allah (SWT);
  2. And His angels;
  3. And His books with Qur'aan being the FINAL and the LAST book;
  4. And His Messengers with Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) being the FINAL and the LAST Messenger;
  5. And in the Last Day (Day of Judgment);
  6. And in Fate, that good and bad is from Allah (SWT);
  7. And the life after death;

Let me know if you have any questions about any of these.

Cleanliness:

One of the first duties incumbent upon Muslims is to stay spiritually and physically clean. Whenever you take a shower, you need to do 3 things from now on:

  1. Gargle 3 times (and spit the water out), see step 4
  2. Sniff the water 3 times in your nose (and throw it out), see step 5
  3. Rub your whole body thoroughly so nothing is left dry

So jump in the shower and start practising this.
