The Real Reason You Can’t Stay in a Job For Very Long

If you’ve changed jobs a LOT and struggle to stay in a job for more than 9 to 12 months, you’ve probably been called a ‘job hopper’ at least once in your life. Well, research by LinkedIn suggests that you’re in good company, with millennials reported to change jobs four times by the age of 32. As someone who changed, not just jobs, but entire careers five times by the age of 32, The Ambition Plan’s founder Lauretta Ihonor says that job hopping doesn’t always signal immaturity or an inability to commit, instead it can be a sign that something much bigger is brewing within you.

Why can’t I stay in a job for very long?
Do you go through jobs at a rapid rate, growing bored and dissatisfied once you’ve achieved the goals you set for yourself and the repetitive monotony sets in? Welcome to the club. Before I delve into why job hopping could signal a very bright future for you (if you channel the thing that’s driving your job hopping) I should point out that all job hoppers are not the same.

The job hoppers I refer to in this article are people who excel at their jobs, achieve big things in record time, but then leave due to an overwhelming need to find a new challenge. You want to work, but you want the work you do to be fulfilling and worth every single second you spend in the office.

Having been there and done that myself, and now spending a good chunk of my typical workday mentoring many women who job-hopped incessantly before figuring out what they wanted to do with their lives, I can assure you that an inability to settle in a job for long may signal that, like a small percentage of the general population, you’re not a big flake, you’re a multipotentialite.

What’s that?

The term multipotentiality was described by R.H. Fredrickson and co-authors in 1972 as “the ability to select and develop any number of career options because of a wide variety of interests, aptitudes, and abilities.”

And author Emilie Wapnick, who has a website that’s dedicated to all things multipotentiality, says “a multipotentialite is a person who has many different interests and creative pursuits in life. Multipotentialites have no ‘one true calling’ the way specialists do. Being a multipotentialite is our destiny. We have many paths and we pursue all of them, either sequentially or simultaneously (or both).”

Did things just fall into place for you?

Let’s get even more specific. Are you:

1. Naturally curious and love to learn
2. Able to pick up new skills quickly
3. Known for throwing yourself into a new interest with an amazing amount of energy and enthusiasm
4. Also known for quickly growing bored once you’ve learned whatever you wanted to learn about that specific interest/topic
5. Prone to moving on without finishing projects – starting a project and finding a solution to a problem is more important to you than actually implementing the solution and seeing it through to the very end

Then, you’re almost certainly a multipotentialite.

And despite what the majority of society will tell you, that’s not a bad thing at all. In fact, once you understand your basic needs as a multipotentialite, it becomes much easier to create a career that will work for you.

Top of the list is entrepreneurship. As an entrepreneur, you need to be good at coming up with creative ideas, finding ways to monetise them and then taking that vision from idea to reality. Entrepreneurship is also a good career path for a multipotentialite because it provides an opportunity for continuous growth, learning and reinvention. Best yet is that there’s always the option of selling your company or bringing in a CEO to run it when you’ve taken it as far as you want to.

Multipotentialites may also find that today’s increasingly popular portfolio career is a perfect fit for them. Having multiple strings to your career bow provides a way to keep your various interests alive all at once and will most likely prevent boredom from setting in too quickly.

I am a writer, a poet (sometimes), a speaker, a journalist (of a kind), a youtuber, a graphic designer, a video editor, a nasheed artist, a religious person, I love to travel, I love to help the poor and needy, a kind of psychologist, a philosopher, a dreamer, I hate jobs, I love freedom, I adore independence. I am a good motivational speaker. A counselor.

With that many interests, I can safely conclude that I am a multipotentialite. Today, after knowing about this term and reading about it, I have come to know about my own restlessness and curious nature. This is why, my family couldn't understand me and this is why I have never stuck to one objective and task in life for very long. The longest work which I have done is youtubing (more than 1.6 years) and that also I guess because of it's free form nature. You can create and upload anything. It's your channel. And you have the freedom to express anything you want.

Sorry for not being able to translate it into English. That is simply because I don’t have enough vocabulary for it.

This may be true in terms of Dunya (I disagree) but in terms of Islam, consistency is a great blessing of Allah. In my decades of experience, consistency is not an on/off switch so you cannot be consistent in Deen but inconsistent in Dunya so I strongly urge all to follow Sunnah and aim for consistency in all your matters.

If you are not consistent, this trait can be developed with practise.

Come rain, hail, sunshine stick to your goal.

Last minute, last bullet.

Consistency in deen is a different thing. Here a different thing is being discussed. Allah has created everyone differently. People have different temperaments, talents, strengths, weaknesses. The thing is to accept others as they are and not to force someone in a box. Obviously, not talking in religious context. One can't leave a murderer or criminal as he is (thinking that it's his/her personal matter or choice).

The best administrator, whether of an organization, a company or a country is he, who can determine the strengths and weaknesses of his employees, workers, subjects and then use them to their fullest potential to achieve a common goal in a manner that their strengths are fully taken advantage of and their weaknesses are not exposed by giving everyone the right task according to their abilities. This is what is called good leadership and this is what is called division of labour.

A garden with flowers of same colour is ugly. A world of things consisting of only one colour is dull. No one is worthless and useless. There is goodness in everyone. Give the right environment and then see how everyone flourishes to the fullest of their potential.

Do not live your life. Feel it as well. Feel it to the fullest. Cherish it. Be thankful for it. Do not be stagnant. Instead a running stream. Life is not in stillness but in motion. Do not be a dot. Connect the dots instead, and create a new picture of your liking. You are a slave because you think so. Stop submitting and you will be free. They program you and use fear as a tool. Stop fearing and you will be free. Leave your signature every where. Instead of being effected, start affecting. Instead of listening. Make them listen. Instead of seeking. Make them seek. You have a light within you which is unmatched. Discover it and use it to show the world what it knows not. Do not be doubtful. Be confident. It is not the words which have power, but the experience of them. Experience comes through practice and practice demands the first step. The first step is always risky. But there is no glory without risks. Your inner strength will prepare you, to gather the tools you need. Without this strength you will be easily swayed by the first blow of that thunderous storm. Your soul is the real you. So discover your real you. You are too blind to see you and you want the world to see? You don't understand yourself. And you want the world to understand? You do not know yet. And you want the world to know? Become an example and lead rest of the world. Their way is not your way. So show them the right way. Don't be fooled by the glitter. All that glitters is not gold.

They want to find the truth in books where as the truth is in you. Unleash your inner you and show them the truth.

Logic is limited and Ishq is unlimited. Logic only explains where as Ishq makes you the witness. They say it is too far and I feel it's nearness.

‘Consistency’ means to think a hundred times before you make a decision, but once a decision is made, then ‘stand’ by it. The time for making correct choice about your own nature/abilities and a goal is ‘before’ making the decision, not during or after the start of a process. That signifies mental instability, lack of focus and determination, and is therefore considered a negative trait.

It is a fact that people are of different nature and temperaments, but the successful people are only those who know their temperament, make a realistic assessment of his potentials, choose his objectives carefully and after defining a path for himself, steadfastly keep working for his defined objectives. Nothing comes easy, there might be setbacks, frustrations, obstacles but one keeps going, and the more difficult the things get, the harder he works. As is said :”When the going gets tough, the tough get going”....

I agree, sometimes we need to change ‘strategies’. Keep sticking to a failed strategy is foolishness, but the ‘objectives’ should not change.

In purely religious terminology such a person is called HANEEF, the one who is single minded in his belief.....

What about using different talents to reach one goal? Learning from one project and utilizing that learning to a different project? Combining disciplines and a variety of talents to create a new discipline? Exploring new possibilities? Widening the horizons? Experimentation? Creating a network of people with different talents and interests and then using them in a way that they create a new and interesting opportunity, discovery or invention which the world has never seen?

For example, In Graphic Design there are many sub disciplines like illustration, logo design, typography, image manipulation, print design, screen design, web design, prototyping, interface design etc. And know how of one sub discipline enhances one's understanding in other sub disciplines. Most of the projects need know how of many of the above mentioned sub disciplines.

Similarly in web development, there is front end development and back-end development. In front end development also, there is the design aspect and the coding aspect. In coding too there are various languages and in one language there are many frameworks. A good developer must know a fundamental understanding of each sub discipline even if he has to specialize in one. On many occasions many sub disciplines intersect and he must know when to use what and where to use it efficiently.

I started work in 1998 and am still at the same place as an engineer. But along the way, I've taken up the roles of each employee, i.e. I do everything from engineering, to management, to receptionist, to administration, to sales, to account management and so on. I'm able to do every role and more, but I've stayed at the same place since 1998 in a small firm which consists of less than 10 people.

I personally don't like the idea of moving around, to me it seems like one is not capable or not worthy of such roles, hence they cannot stick to it. At the same time, if someone stays within the same firm and moves their way up into different departments and different roles, that's a whole different case. It shows commitment.

If I do something or take something on, I commit myself to it to the best of my ability and don't walk away or quit.

I find that this is the case with work, friends, family, world wide web and so on.

I don't walk away from my commitments

Advice to everyone under 30

I have post graduate education, consultant by profession and have experience of working on 4 continents on this Earth with diverse workforce, individuals and cultures. I have employed and lived through the unpleasant incidents of firing/sacking of many employees.

I have discussed and given career advice to many youngsters (men and women) both Muslims and non-Muslims, long list. My door is always open to any Muslim for career advice (men or women).

I am also qualified in handling employment dismissals, tribunals and court cases.

I have looked through 100s (if not thousands) of CVs/Biodata (whatever) in my life and sat through many many employment Interviews in my life.

I can smell DODOO (from people’s forum posts) let alone given a chance to see your CV and physically Interview you for a job.

I am not a Sufi so there is no bone of false pride in my body. Do not take this post as nonsense from someone who does not know what they are talking about.

I am giving all you youngsters some Naseeha (advise).

  1. Your generation has been brought up to give excuses.
  2. Your generation has been brought up to blame someone else for your problems.
  3. Your generation has been brought up to irresponsible. Look for excuses for your failure.

Quote:
I was given two pieces of advice by elders Tableeghi Jamaat when I was 19 and its held up pretty well.

  1. Hard work has NEVER killed anybody
  2. Its mind over matter, if you don't mind it DAMN SURE don't matter

In those days, the elders use to check our grades and if you slackened you got sanctioned. No Khurooj, no Bayans, no Gashts. You brought your homework to the Masjid and you did your work while everyone else did Gasht. You went for 3 days with your college/university work. If your Parents had a complain, they went to your local Ameer and you got your A*& kicked in PUBLIC!

Nowadays, you go in Jamaat with your cigarettes and iphones and chill out.

When you spoke in Mushwara, you were asked to explain WHY you said WHAT you said. These days, you can say any non-sense without thinking and encourage you to run your big mouth without consequences.

I (and others) were physically beaten in Jamaat while making mistakes in Tajweed. Brother Yaseen (from new York) who has now passed away (RA) used to tell us in absolute disdain while holding a stick in his hand during Tajweed session

You PAKEES come to America and learn Engineering but your lazy A&**&^^ cannot work to recite the book of Allah Ta'ala, what is wrong with you people???

Make one more mistake on the book of Allah Ta'ala and I will beat you until you hurt!

The African-American and Revert brothers used to get beaten with punches for making mistakes. I have seen with my own eyes boxing punches in the middle of Tajweed learning.

But they loved us to death because they fixed our Dunya and tried to fix our Akhira. The old Deoband elders DID NOT even look at you if you had a shaved face or trimmed beard.

Colonel Saheb (RA) used to openly say to people, "Your face looks like the backside of a monkey" in the Masjid. "You are a disgrace to the honour of Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam)".

That’s why there is such a high depression, mental health, suicide rate (among both Muslims and Non-Muslim) because all the mumbo-jumbo nonsense is tolerated in the name of politeness and courtesy and body does Islah (reformation) anymore. Islah (reformation) is left to recited a few Adhkaar and Tasbeehs morning and night. Suf'ism has become another style of Buddhism.

There is no such thing as I am committed in Deen but uncommitted in Dunya. There is no such thing as I am punctual in Deen but late in Dunya. There is no such thing as I am consistent in Deen but inconsistent in Dunya. You have the same nature (personality traits) in Deen and Dunya, nobody can switch off and switch on at will. You are what you are.

Laziness, procrastination, inconsistencies are all habits which can be changed IF you want to. If you think that your education/employment prospects are bad now just wait for Dajjal to emerge! All this psychological mumble jumble will not help you when are hungry and incarcerated in a concentrated camp. Make prostration to someone other than Allah and all your (Dunya) issues will be resolved OR you can die on Tawheed.

When that day comes, it will too late for you to learn how to sacrifice. Time to fix your habits, time wasting, laziness, procrastination etc is right now.

P.S: Yes, this sounds like a rant/anger/moan from your father but you will realise the value of your father after HE IS DEAD.

To be honest such phrases like "What is a Multipotentialite?" is just another way of putting yourself at ease and not having the reality hit you in the sense that there is a possibility that one has issues

But this is my opinion ;)

When I was younger and on summer vacation from studies, I would be looking for a job. One of the tips I was given was how to respond if I was asked what I was currently doing.

So I was told to say that I was a "Freelance Administrator" a fancy way of saying "Unemployed"

Saying these put ease to the mind that I've actually got a title l. But in reality when this continued it gave false hope and a false image

What you said makes complete sense

The points you mentioned are completely correct about our generation.

However, you've mentioned about sufis not being able to help. Im sure they can help, if you go to the right mashaikh with true desire.

Mufti rafi usmani mentioned in a bayan to leave sin is difficult, however it becomes easier by sitting with the truthful people, I.e the mashaikh/ true sufis.
