Asalaam alekom

Showing off in Deen is Reyya and forbidden. But is it ok if you show off in dunia? Only if you wear branded dress or you share/talk about your tours (like your friends do), or you decorate your home? Does all these counts in pride or prominence? Thnx

Just keep in mind of our tiny little mistakes which make us end up suffering and end up looking for solutions!

Walaikumus Salam warahmatullah

Yes ostentation is haram whether it is about the deen or dunya as it inculcates vanity, pride, jealousy, love of dunya and other spiritual diseases in a person's heart.

Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Whoever wears a garment in vanity, Allah will make him wear a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection, then He will set it ablaze with fire.”

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Be modest in front of Allah for He has a right to your modesty. We said, “O Messenger of Allah, we have modesty. All praise is due to Allah.” The Prophet said: That is not what I meant. Having modesty with Allah is to protect the mind and what runs through it, to protect the stomach and what fills it, and to remember death and trials. Whoever wants the Hereafter should leave the ostentation of the worldly life, so whoever acts like this has been modest with Allah as is His right.

Libaas ul-Shuhrah

All praise and thanks be to Allaah the Lord of the worlds.

Regarding your question about the prohibition of so-called "libaas ul-shuhrah" (lit. dress of high repute, i.e. to show-off or as a status symbol), there is a sound and truthful hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) that Allah's messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "He who wears libaas ul-shuhra in this world will be dressed in humiliating clothes on the day of judgment." (narrated by Ahmed & Abu Dawood, confirmed sahih by Al Albani in Sahih Al-Jami' 6526)

Those who wear libaas ul-shuhrah will be punished on the day of judgment in accordance with their deeds (as you sow, so you reap), provided that he/she meant sovereignty and supremacy upon mankind. In return, Allaah Almighty will humiliate him/her on the day of judgment and will suppress him/her to put-on such a dress for which people would despise him/her and mock at him/her (as you sow, so you reap).

The question here is: " What consists libaas ul-shurah?" What is meant by this expression is a anything worn to show-off and to attract the attentions of others, so as to look upwards unto him/her once he/she appears wearing it. This, of course is due either to its strange colors amongst the ordinary dresses of other people or due to the stylish models or even to how precious, expensive or even to the contrary of this as being trivial and completely valueless.

Hence, our righteous forefathers (may Allaah have mercy upon their souls) used to hate, disregard and even despise either extremity of the fame-clothing: i.e. those which are highly bombastic & precious and/or vise versa alike.

All we wish of His All-Mighty is to grant us the righteous clothing and save us in this world and in the hereafter. Aameen.

Ibn ‘Abbas RA said, “Eat what you like and wear what you like as but avoid two things: extravagance and arrogance.” (Bukhari)

Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله ﺗﻌﺎﻟﯽٰ عنه reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever wears a garment of fame (to show it off), Allah will make him wear a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection and then He will set it ablaze with fire.” – Sunan Ibn Majah 3607

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

“Whoever wears a piece of clothing in order to show off and that people look at it, Allah will not look at the person till he takes it off (Allah will not look at him so long as he is wearing them).” -Tabarani

Abu Hurairah رضي الله ﺗﻌﺎﻟﯽٰ عنه related: Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “While a man was walking, dressed in clothes admiring himself, his hair combed, walking haughtily when Allah caused the earth to swallow him. Now he will continue to go down in it (as a punishment) until the Day of Resurrection.” [Sahih Muslim].

It has been narrated by Muadh Ibn-Jabal رضي الله ﺗﻌﺎﻟﯽٰ عنه that when the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent him to Yemen he said to him:

“Beware of luxury, for the slaves of Allah do not live a life of luxury.” [Ahmad]

JazakAllah khair sister.
I got scared with ur comments. :(

But if you change ur intention not to show off but only to wear dress with all aspects of modesty, with which you can offer prayers too. But you wear it just you like it. Not to show off. Still it will considered as dressing for prominence? N you get punished?

No it will not be considered blameworthy because Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty. If you are wearing beautiful dresses with no intention to show off or to compete with other ladies and without an iota of pride in your heart, then it is permissible.

There are two main objectives of clothing as mentioned in Surah Al-'Araaf:

1. Covering of 'awrah
2. Adornment

"O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment."

Du’a for wearing clothes on a daily basis

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, If anyone puts on a garment and says: “Praise be to Allah Who has clothed me with this and provided me with it through no might and power on my part,” he will be forgiven his former and later (minor) sins.

Dua for wearing new clothes

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: When the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم wore a new garment he would name it, such as a turban, a shirt, or a cloak, and then he would say, “O Allah, praise be to you that you have dressed me with it. I ask you for its goodness and the goodness for which it was made. I seek refuge in you from its evil and the evil for which it was made.”Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1767
