salaam

what is the origin of saying radhiAllahu anhu after sahaba and salalaahu alaihi wa sallam after mentioning the prophet? did the sahaba begin saying رضي الله عنه after the death of their fellow companions?

as for (saw) it is generally them most common salawat sent when rasoolullah (saw) is mentioned along with salawatullahi alai which i think mostly arabs say. which darood did the sahaba say when mentioning the prophet? also whilst the prophet was alive did they only say ya rasoolullah or did they also say a darood afterwards and then say what they had to say?

I don't know if it was present as such in the times of our prophet pbuh,as the Ahkam (instructions) of Din were still evolving, and Sahaba most certainly followed the Ahkam as they were given...

It is mentioned by Fuqaha, those who speaks or listens about the prophet, then at least once in that majlis, reciting Durood upon the prophet pbuh becomes wajib on them, and then as many times as the blessed name is mentioned in the same majlis, reciting Durood is a virtue, though not wajib. This instruction of Fuqaha is based upon multiple ahadeeth, like the one where Syedena Jibril would curse those not doing so (after listening to the blessed name of the prophet pbuh) and the prophet pbuh would say Amin.May be this is the origin of this virtuous practice followed by the pious people of this Ummah.

As for the addition of رضى الله عنه after the name of Sahaba,it originates from the Ayat of Qur'an,which says :

“Allah swt is pleased with them and they are pleased with Allah"..

Additionally, adding those words of respect for Sahaba is an accepted شعار (established practice) of Ahle sunnah as against Shia. Wallaho alam

An alim once told me that when reading the hadith, "Ya Rasulullah" was NOT to be followed by darood. In all other mentions of the Prophet (saw), the durood was to be used.

jazakAllah for the replies. just to clarify then the sahaba didnt say رضي الله عنه when referring to a sahaabi who had passed away?

Also when reading seerah and hadith and you come across something like " umar said ya rasoolullah (saw) ......." is that (saw) what umar would have said or the person writing the book as rasoolullah (saw) has been mentioned so he wrote it. i just finished sh yasir qadhi seerah which mashAllah is one of the most detailed one ever made in english language and from what i gathered the sahaba wouldnt say a darood when addressing thr prophet in his presence. is this correct?

They used other words like فداك ابى وًامى يا رسول الله while directly addressing the prophet pbuh,or some similar words of respect...

In case of sahaba, it might have become necessary to routinely use some words of respect for sahaba when Shia started talking ill of them, though nobody considered it an obligation.

As you know, like when some bad people in Banu umayya and khawarij started cursing the blessed face of Syedena Ali, the pious made it a point to use the words كرم الله وجهه with his name to counter them, and it continues till today.
