Ultra Low Emission Zone

Any vehicle that meets the ULEZ standard will be able to travel in the zone without paying the ULEZ charge.

On 25 October 2021 the ULEZ will be expanded to inner London (the area up to but not including the North and South Circular Roads). A map of the expanded zone is on the Ultra Low Emission Zone page.

Enforcement of the ULEZ will be based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age. Generally speaking, ULEZ-compliant petrol cars are those registered after 2005. However cars that meet the ULEZ standards have been available since 2000.

For diesel vans the Euro 6 standard was mandated for all new vehicles sold from September 2016. Our compliance checker will allow you to check whether any second-hand vehicle purchased is compliant.

Check if your car/van will need to pay this extra charge - You have time to sell your car and buy something compatible or move out of London :(

Congestion Charge and T-Charge

Your vehicle may also be subject to the Congestion Charge and/or T-Charge. This is a daily charge for driving a vehicle within the charging zone between 07:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday (two-wheeled vehicles are not affected).

Low Emission Zone (LEZ) compliance

Diesel lorries, buses, coaches, motor caravans, motorised horseboxes, larger vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles must also comply with the emissions standards of the LEZ. You can check if your vehicle is affected by the LEZ with the LEZ vehicle checker.

This covers most of Greater London and is in operation 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The LEZ has different emissions requirements to the ULEZ. If your vehicle meets the ULEZ emissions standards, it will also meet the LEZ emissions standards. However, the reverse may not be true. You need to use the ULEZ checker to see if your vehicle meets the more stringent ULEZ standards.

If your vehicle meets the LEZ standards but doesn't meet the central London ULEZ standards and you want to use your vehicle within central London from 8 April 2019, you will need to pay the ULEZ daily charge. You may also be liable for the daily Congestion Charge which also operates in central London.

This is becoming a nightmare for me :(

I haven't owned a car since 2011 and I think I'll be better off without one at this rate.

I've been looking for an economical car with good average mileage and low road tax etc... But it seems like they are all subject the ULEZ.

Even though on the site says the car can be as old as 20 years, that's not true.

I just saw a nice 1.6 litre Deisel car from 2014 and after checking the registarion plate on the portal above, it says this car is subject to the daily charge :(

I've gone through so many cars and same results! Looks like they want to get rid of Deisel cars altogether

Anyone else checked their cars yet? (This is for Londoners or people who drive in London)

I think he is mistaken. His BMW doesn't have Adblue but I am not sure because he is saying that it is...

Some the 3 series have been Euro 6 for a long time but 5-Series just started switching to Adblue within the past 5 years or so

I was very close to getting the BMW 5-Series or an Audi A6, I don't live in London but sooner or later they will roll this out all over the country and this is to go after Diesel Engines for sure

More way of making money...

Discounts and exemptions

Residents

  • Residents who are registered for the residents' Congestion Charge discount will be granted a time-limited 'sunset period' where a 100% discount from the ULEZ will apply to their vehicles. This will give them more time to change their vehicle to meet the ULEZ standards
  • The discount will be available to those who live within the ULEZ and in designated areas next to the boundary where the Congestion Charge resident's discount applies. The sunset period will apply  from 8 April 2019 to 24 October 2021
  • This discount will only apply while they live within the zone and are registered with us
  • From 25 October 2021, residents must pay the full daily ULEZ charge to drive a vehicle in the zone if it does not meet the ULEZ standards
  • Residents using a vehicle that doesn't meet the T-Charge emissions standards will continue to pay the T-Charge, at a discounted rate of 90%, during the ULEZ resident sunset period

Vehicles for disabled people

  • Vehicles that have a 'disabled' or 'disabled passenger vehicles' tax class and are exempt from vehicle tax, except those operated by or on behalf of Transport for London, will be granted a disabled vehicles sunset period following the introduction of the scheme until 26 October 2025, during which they will be exempt from the ULEZ daily charge (as long as the taxation class of their vehicle does not change). Read the eligibility criteria for the disabled exemption on Gov.uk
  • If your vehicle meets the above criteria and is registered in the UK, it is automatically exempt from ULEZ during the disabled vehicles sunset period and you don't need to register with us. If your vehicle meets the above criteria, but is registered outside the UK, you are also exempt from ULEZ during the disabled vehicles sunset period, but will need to register with us. Details on how you can register will be available closer to the time
  • Vehicles used by Blue Badge holders must meet the new ULEZ emission standards unless the vehicle is registered with the DVLA with a 'disabled' or 'disabled passenger vehicle' tax class. If your vehicle meets neither of these conditions and you want to use your vehicle within the ULEZ, from 8 April 2019 you will need to pay the charge
  • From 27 October 2025, the daily ULEZ charge will payable for vehicles with 'disabled' or 'disabled passenger vehicles' tax class that do not the ULEZ emission standards
