Wa alaykum as salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

"The Muslims of Afghanistan are predominantly Hanafi in fiqh, so when you are with them, you should follow them, as this will lead to greater unity in your cause."

Shaykh Bin Baz (RA) and Usama bin Ladin (RA) were both children (in terms of stature) and nobody in 1980s. The Scholar of rank during Soviet Jihad was Shaykh Abdullah Azzam (RA) so get the facts straight before labeling someone "Deobandi" or removing the label and sticking a "NoBandi" label on others.

I heard the Khutbahs of Shaykh Abdullah Azzam (RA) every few weeks in Islamabad because Lal Masjid is where my father took me to pray Fridays along with many others in Islamabad. It was the Masjid where most people went (along with women), nothing to do with Jihad. Most Government officers went because:

  1. Maulana (RA) was an employee of Federal Government so most Government officials (like my father) went there
  2. General Ziaul Haq (RA) prayerd there (when in Islamabad)
  3. It was the only Mosque to have women facilities so families went

I also saw General Zialul Haq (RA) there so many times.

None of these people were "Deobandi" in any sense of the word at all and there was no push to convert them to "Deobandees" as the partisanship of Salafi/Deobandi Manhaj wars was to begin a decade later.

It was the JackAss "Deobandees" who tried to put a Turban on the head of Mullah Omar (RA) much later and showered Khilafah on him like candy to make him Deobandi and a Sufi, he was neither!

Mullah Omar (RA) was 6'4" and this short Deobandi climbed on the back of the Sofa in trying to tie a turban and fell in his lap in the process and the entire Shura burst out laughing (due to the comedy), the display by Deobandees was sickening and comedically funny at the same time.

Taliban were/are never Deobandi at all, some of them happen to study at Deobandi Institutions. These were standard Hanafi Muslims, its the close minded xenophobic (Pakistani) Deobandees who claim the non-sense. In fact, Taliban even had Shia ministers in the cabinet let alone number two of Taliban cabinet who was a Ghair-Muqallid.

According to Mufti Abu Bilal and one Afghani friend of mine, it was Shaykh Abdullah Azzam who advised the Arab mujahideen to follow Hanafis while in Afghanistan.

On record and well known and widely practiced.

Hanafi ≠ Deobandi

That's why the fanatical "Deobandees" call themselves "Sunni Deobandi Hanafi" to make a distinct identity, ridiculous as it may be.  The simplest example is of Maulana Ubaidullah Sindhi (RA) unless fanatics now think that he was not "Deobandi"

He spoke in Arabic. There was translation on the side in Urdu and Khutbah was of course in Arabic only.

But he did know basics of Urdu, I do not recall him speaking in Urdu though

Mujahideen Ke Tarane

Till some time back I used to listen to the Taranas recited by the Mujahideen and frankly I used to cry. These were the people who recited from heart and kept their words by laying down their respective lives in the path of Allah SWT. These were the best of the people. By the end of 2008 new Taranas stopped appearing. I take that as the end of a generation of those who took Islam seriously. A few years down the line we started getting the news about the Daesh and it continued up to about 2016. I roughly consider the Afghan Mujahideen who defeated USSR and the Taliban from Ahl-e-Sunnah and Al-Qaida to be from Ikhwan kind of ideology and ISIS to be of Salafi orientation. I might be wrong.

By the Taranas, still available at the You Tube channel of Ugerwadi1, I used to get intense pain in my heart for those who sacrificed their lives in the path of Allah SWT. They are all gone now and I realize that we are living in a different generation.

Of course the Taliban who are at the helm of the affairs in Afghanistan now are from the same group who had put their lives on the line. Yet with the withdrawal of the US from Afghanistan we have entered a new era. At the moment it is difficult for me to put it in words but at the moment we are in an era where we have a group, the Taliban, who can talk on the table to the main opposition - the US.

What are the tasks ahead that the poet is talking in these couplets? I leave you people to guess about these.

Wo sang e giran jo hayal hai, rastay se hata kar dam lenge
Ham rah e wafa ke rehro hain, manzil hee pe jake dam lenge

Ye baat ayan hai duniya par, ham phool bhi hain talawar bhi hain
Ya bazm e jahan mehkayenge, ya khoon mein naha ke dam lenge

Arbab e hukumat se keh do, ye azm kia hai hum sabne
Jo haq ke muqabil aayega, hum usko mita kar dum lenge

Hum ek Khuda ke qayal hain, pindar ka har but todenge
Hum haq ke nishan hain duniya mein, batil ko mita kar dum lenge

Jo sina e dushman chaak kare, batil ko mita kar khaak kare
Ye roz ka qissa paak kare, woh zarb laga kar dum lenge

Ye fitna o shar ke parwarda, tehzeeb ke samaan lakh kare
Hum bazam sajane wale hain, hum bazam saja kar dum lenge

Ye Amriki dallaal bhala, kyaa khaak darayenge humko
Hum rah e wafa ke rahroo hain, manzil hee pe jake dum lenge

Is desh ke zarre zarre ko, hum apne khoon se seenchenge
Allah ki kasam is dharti ko, gulzar banakar dum lenge

Jis khoon e shaheedan se ab tak, gull rang huyi hai ye dharti
Us khoon ke qatre qatre se, tufaan utha kar dum lenge
