India Facing Challenges

Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman accepted that India faces challenges.

Indian economy slumped to six year low.

This has prompted many global agencies to cut India's GDP growth by various degrees for 2019-20.

The RBI, in October monetary policy review, had cut sharply its economic growth projection for the country for this fiscal to 6.1 per cent from 6.9 per cent earlier.

Maharashtra Government Formation

Kamlesh Tiwari Murder : October 18, 2019

Maharashtra Assembly Election : October 21, 2019

Supreme Court Verdict on Babri Masjid Title Suit : November 9, 2019

India at the moment is in an ecstatic mood over government formation in the State of Maharashtra. Why? Because strange bed fellows like Congress (the Secular, Liberal and Democratic party of the country) and the Shiv Sena ( one of the many Islamophobic parties of India) are forming the government and the secular liberals of India are telling us, Muslims as well as whosoever is listening, that what a perfidy is under progress.

One question can be raised at this scene. Is this sarcasm on part of the secular liberal democrats real? There will be Muslims who will say that this is merely an eyewash after the gymnastic laded verdict of the top court where destruction of the Babri Masjid was criticized but the land was nevertheless awarded to the very people who destroyed the Mosque.

SIT Report on 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots

The Special Investigation Team formed by the Honourable Supreme Court to investigate the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots has submitted its sealed report.

The team had investigated 186 cases.

Since the report is sealed we do not know the details but the public facts are well known.

The Sikh community has doggedly pursued the case and they have extracted compensation three times from the government.

In case of riots where Muslims were on the receiving end the same thing can not be said.

In fact the story in these cases is very sordid and we digress.

There are inconvenient things in case of Sikhs too.

A friend remarked that before those riots the number of Sikhs in armed forces has come down drastically. Shashi Tharoor in one of his books wrote that Sikhs made up one quarter of Indian armed forces. Sikhs in India are 1.72 percent of the population.

In eighties of the last century there was huge militancy in the Sikh populated northern state of Punjab. The ostensible object was the formation of an independent state called Khalistan. Parallel insurgency was going on in Kashmir.

Kashmir was given in the hands of the army while Punjab was dealt with the police. Initially the Punjab task was carried by Julio F Ribero and then finished by another IPS (Indian Police Services) officer KPS Gill.

Two extremely worrying issues on Punjab story are the ones that were high lighted in two different films. One is Udta Punjab (2016) where the drug problem in that state has been focused upon. Was it a punishment for militancy?

The another problem is of the cancer generating industry in the same state where an area of the state has got so much of pollution that the number of cancer patients are so high that there is a special train to fetch them. This problem was high lighted in the film Irada (2017)

Professor Ariful Islam, Late Engineer Ahmed Salim Peerzada and Professor Syed Ali Amir - 1

Indian Muslims formed the Muslim League in Dhaka, now in Bangladesh, in 1906 to safeguard their interests in independent India.

Till 1940 they were very actively striving for getting an equitable deal for themselves once British would leave India, as they, the British, did in 1947.

Muslims realized that this is not going to be the case. The Indian National Congress would not agree to any scheme that would ensure that Muslims would get an equitable deal in independent India.

Thus some of them brought the Pakistan Resolution in the 1940 Lahore Session of the Muslim League.

As a result India was partition in August 1947 into two states - India and Pakistan.

In 1971 India sliced Pakistan into two creating an independent state of Bangladesh. But we digress.

In this whole game the issue of Muslims of Independent India went into a limbo.

They were left with the Congress' vague promise of equality and this pie in the sky has not fallen into their lap as of yet.

Effectively the posture of the Indian National Congress can be summarized in the following nursery story.

***

Once upon a time democracy descended in the jungle.

The elections were held and out of the two candidates, the Lion and the Monkey, the latter one one won.

The Monkey was designated as the ruler of the land, the jungle.

The next day the Lion stole the deer calf for food.

Mother deer complained to the ruler, the Monkey.

The Monkey went with the aggrieved mother deer to the Lion and indeed the Lion had the cub of the deer in his custody.

The Monkey started jumping from one tree to another in a rather furious manner.

After some time the mother deer asked him when would he liberate her cub.

To this the monkey replied that please tell me whether there is any laxity in my efforts in trying to liberate your cub.

Story over.

***

So what about Indian Muslims? Did they get the equity that the League was trying before partition? Ans: No.

Did they get the equality that the Indian National Congress promised? Ans: No.

The ground reality is that though there have been individual success stories of Muslims doing well in independent India like many Muslims reaching the posts of President, Vice President and Chief Justices as well as high level scientists and even armed forces officers but the overall representation of Muslims in leading walks of life has been from 1.5 to four percent at the most while their official population stands at 14.2 percent.

Indeed on the security side the story has progressively gone from bad to worse where they were earlier subjected to the so called communal riots, then to pogroms and finally incessant lynchings. The present government has brought the things to a nadir where there were the things like the Triple Talaq Bill, removal/diluting of the article 370 on Kashmir and finally the Supreme Court verdict on Ayodhya Babri Masjid land title suit.

So what have Indian Muslims being doing for their problems?

This is a question that bears investigation in many aspects but we shall focus only on political empowerment of Muslims of Independent India.

In this sector too we shall talk only about the efforts of three individuals - Professor Ariful Islam, Late Engineer Ahmed Salim Peerzada and Professor Syed Ali Amir.

We shall do so in the next post.

December 22, 2019

The day will be very short today in northern hemisphere and in spite of being a Sunday I rushed to check my e-mail after nearly a week of shutting down of not only the internet but the cable networks too.

As I enter Bab-e-Syed, the main university gate, I catch the sight of a few girls and a few boys with hand written posters.

I tried to read a few of the banners. Save the Constitution, one of these banners had on it. But the actual words were in Urdu. Constitution Bacha Lo.

The English translation does not have the desperation that the Urdu, even when written in Roman script, has it.

I girl crosses to all the the other side to take a pic of her protesting fellow girls.

When I proceed on my way the girl crosses back to her fellow girl students but not before offering me Salam. It took me a moment to realize that she is my own student. In the moments after this encounter the thought of her face slowly but surely destroyed me completely.

These few girls have been regularly coming to register there presence and to keep the flame burned. They are much more brave than me. I feel like a complete useless person devoid of all Ghairah and courage and integrity.

March 2018 Interview with a former BJP IT Cell Member

(1) Here is the link for the You Tube video by very popular blogger Dhruv Rathi.

(2) Name of this former operative is Mahavir Prasad.

(3) Nitin Gadkari was the BJP president when the IT Cell was formed in 2012.

(4) Prasad was a member from 2013 to 2015.

(5) He was recruited because of his talent for social media by someone called Alok Solanki.

(6) There might be hundreds of thousands of people doing this kind of work.

(7) He was not one of the top 150 but in the next 50 people.

(8) Ankit Pandeya, Vikas Pandey and Subraminiam wre among the Super-150 who got to meet the PM. Quint had a report on it on 06.07.2015 (no-selfie event of Digital India).

(9) Who are in Super-150: Tajinder Bagga

(10) All 150 got to be photographed with the PM. Example Ankit Jain.

(11) Among these 150 many are abusive. Ankit Jain used explitives.

(12) Suresh Nakwa, another member.

(13) Prasad: My work was to do as much trolling as possible. To chase away anyone writing against BJP or to get their account closed by reporting.

(14) 50 people were given this task and if it was not possible to finish the task with this much of workforce then more people were recruited by sending emails.

(15) There were mass email forwarding to thousands of people.

(16) Main content was generated by the Super-150.

(17) Something like 50 tweets were given to thousands of people to do the retweeting at appropriate time.

(18) You could pick up eight to ten tweets of your choice. Anything being retweeted by a thousand people would come in trend automatically.

(19) On 20th Feb, 2018 BJP MP Paresh Rawal accidentally tweeted the behind the scene things where the JhootiCongress trend was being planned.

(20) Prasad was not on tweeter, his job was to copy content on Facebook and websites.

(21) The task in this case was to take any news item on the channels and to add Hindu-Muslim angle to it.

(22) Take any issue and react to it as a Hindu or Dalit or a Muslim.

(23) Five to ten news sites were running for this: Insist Post, Newshourpress, newstrend.news, viral_in_India

(24) One of the sites is getting about 3.5 crore visitors to read the news we created.

(25) Dhruv Rathi did asked Alexa about top websites in India and lo and behold newstrends is among the top 10!

(26) These news websites are higher than any news websites like Indiatimes.

(27) the only sites with larger traffic are Google, You Tube, Facebook, Amazon and Flipkart.

(Only one third of the video covered)

Sharjeel Imam's Facebook Update Yesterday

More than 300 students met under the banner of Muslim Students of JNU on December 5th. On Friday December 6th, we distributed tens of thousands of pamphlets on CAB across Okhla, Nizamuddin, Purani Dilli. The soft copy was sent across cities and it was printed and distributed in many cities and towns.
On 7th hundreds of us went to Jantar Mantar on the call of UAH and talked about chakka jaam in Delhi.
Two days after that ten of us, along with BAPSA leaders Jitendra Suna and Nirban Ray were invited to AMU and we spoke about Chakka Jaam and asked for their assistance.
Then on Friday 13th, MSJ again came out with tens of thousands of pamphlets, but this time we concentrated on Okhla because of Jamia protests. I spoke on three spots, and one of those videos was later made viral by Sanghi IT cell, where they call me fundamentalist.
The next day, dozens took part in the Saturday protests as well and were disappointed by the lack of purpose in Jamia protests. Our group met Aasif Mujtaba and his group in Jamia, and we along with a group of Jamia Students led by Mohammad Arshad Warsi (Students of Jamia) had been discussing the future course of action.
Aasif suggested that we start sensitisation from Shaheen Bagh where he lives, and make consensus over chakka jaam.
The next afternoon, we wanted to meet Ameer e Jamaat, but he wasnt there. After zuhr namaaz, we heard that people were already mobilising at Shaheen Bagh.
As soon as we came out of the mosque, a crowd was coming towards us. The people in front row recognized me, they stopped the crowd, picked me up, and gave me a mike, and asked me: "batao kya karna hai?"
I said: "chakka jaam"
We started, and reached the 9 no turn and started barricading. Soon we heard that people were already sitting near the footover bridge under the leadership of Amanatullah. We went there and joined the crowd. After Amanatullah, Aasif and I had spoken for a few turns, Amanatullah asked the crowd to get up and march towards Amit Shahs residence the next Friday. I took the mike and started arguing against it. A scuffle ensued, the mike was disconnected. But the people helped me, including the ones from MSJ, who made another circle separate from Amanats circle and asked me to speak. While I was speaking, the same Students of Jamia (SoJ) group came rushing with a mike, chanting naara e takbeer.
This is how it all started, people of shaheen bagh, people from JNU, people from Jamia and a few from IITs.

There was one incident of note during the night. The police came around and asked us to vacate. The people agreed on vacating one side, although I was against it. As soon as that side of the road was opened, one bearded man with a tiranga started shouting: "patthar maaro". Soon stone pelting started, and everyone retreated to streets except 25 men. I was one of them, asking them not to do this, otherwise we will give the police a chance. I could drag some people away, but there were still a few left at 10 30 PM. The news of Jamia violence a couple of hours ago had also infuriated people.
Early in the morning , as I was sitting in a room in Shaheen bagh, I get a call that we have barricaded the road again. These were the people, not more than 20, who mobilised after the police left, and barricaded the roads again. When Aasif and I reached the place, there was a crowd of people sitting, and they invited us to start speaking. That Monday morning, Shaheen Bagh roadblock had finally arrived, and JNU (MSJ, BAPSA), Jamia (SoJ), AMU, IITs all played their role in it.
