Maulana Yusuf Ludhianvi رحمه الله cautions:

"Never allow yourself to be impressed by the great worldly possessions of a non-believer. If you realise the eternal doom that unbelief promises, you will feel pity rather than envy." [First things first, p347, Khalid Baig]

The sign of love of the Sunna is love of the Next World.

The sign of love of the Next World is hatred for this world.

The sign of hatred of this world is that you do not store up any of it except for provision and what you need to arrive safely in the Next World."

Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما said:

"Allaah has divided the world into three portions: One for the believer, One for the hypocrite, And one for the unbeliever.

A believer makes provisions [for the Hereafter],

A hypocrite adorns [himself],

And an unbeliever enjoys [himself]."

In a hadeeth transmitted by Imam Bukhari رحمه الله, Sayyiduna 'Umar رضي الله عنه relates:

"I arrived to find the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم in a small room resting on a straw mat with nothing in between him and it. His head was rested on a leather pillow filled with palm fibres... I saw the lines from the mat marking his side and began to weep. I said, 'O Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم, Caesar and Chosroes enjoy the [prosperity] that they have, whereas you, the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم, are [in this state]?'

He صلى الله عليه وسلم replied, 'Are you not content that for them is this world and for us is the Hereafter?'"

Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says:

"Let not the free disposal (and affluence) of the disbelievers throughout the land deceive you. A brief enjoyment; then, their ultimate abode is Hell; and worst indeed is that place for rest. But, for those who fear their Lord, are Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise); therein are they to dwell (for ever), an entertainment from Allah; and that which is with Allah is the Best for Al-Abrar (those who are obedient to Allah and follow strictly His Orders)." The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Accursed is the slave of the dinar and the dirham." (Bukhari; Tirmidhi)

This hadith refers to those whose main aim in life is the accumulation of wealth that has led them to become heedless of the remembrance of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and other religious obligations. (Mazad al-Raghibeen, 39)

"Three things follow a dead person, then two things return and one remains with him: his family, wealth, and deeds go with him, then his family and wealth return [from his gravesite] and his deeds remain." (Bukhari; Muslim; Tirmidhi)

The best investment a person can make in this world is good deeds for the Hereafter, for all else is in vain. (Provisions for the Seekers)

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Exercise abstinence from the world and Allaah will love you, and abstain from what people have and they will love you." (Tirmidhi; Ibn Maja; Mustadrak)

"Abstinence from the world" is reached by abandoning love for it, abstaining from that which is beyond one's basic needs, and fervently advancing toward the Hereafter. This increases one's worship of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى, and Allaah سبحانه و تعالى loves him because the person has abandoned the enemy of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى - the world.

"Abstaining from what people have" will cause them to love him too, simply because he is not seen as a competitor or threat to them in the worldly gains they seek. They fear no harm from him in this regard.

Zuhd, or "abstinence," is the distancing of the soul from the world for the sake of the Hereafter, despite having the capability [to indulge], either out of fear for Hellfire, desire for Paradise, or disdain for turning toward anything but the Truthful One (al-Haq). This state can only be developed after the heart becomes expanded with the light of certitude (yaqeen). It is stated that zuhd cannot be perceived from one who does not possess any wealth or honour to begin with.

Once someone addressed the great ascetic and hadith scholar 'Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak رحمه الله saying, "O zahid." He replied, "The true zahid is 'Umar Ibn 'Abdul 'Azeez رحمه الله, who, when the world came to him in reluctant submission, abandoned it."

This, however, is an example of the highest degree of zuhd. (Mirqat al-Mafatih, 9:40-41)

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Be in the world as though you were a stranger or wayfarer." (Bukhari)

Imam Nawawi رحمه الله says, "Do not become attached to this world and take it up as a long time-time residence. Instead, live in it as a stranger or traveller in a foreign place."

This is because the world is only a bridge that needs to be crossed, so a believer should occupy himself in worship and obedience and await departure from this world at every moment, keeping himself free of unnecessary burdens and liabilities. (Mirqat al-Mafatih, 9:126)

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Do not own an estate and thus begin to desire the world." (Tirmidhi; Mustadrak)

Day'a "estate" could refer to a business, farm, or orchard. Becoming absorbed in the running and administration of an estate could make one neglectful of his duties to Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and lead him to cherish the pleasures of the world more. Hence, this hadith warns against occupations that make one heedless of his obligations to Allaah سبحانه و تعالى. (Mirqat al-Mafatih, 9:33)

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"Beware of living sumptuously, for the [true] servants of Allaah do not live sumptuously." (Ahmad)

"Living sumptuously" has been explained as exerting every effort in acquiring an abundance of worldly goods and going to the extreme in fulfilling one's desires [in other words, living for the world]. this attribute is typical of the unbelievers, sinners, heedless, and ignorant ones, as Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says,
"Leave them alone to eat and enjoy and let [false] hope distract them, for soon they will know." (15:3) (Mirqat al-Mafatih, 9:116)

Abu' l-Abbas as-Sa'idi said :

"A man came to the Prophet (saws) and said, 'Oh Messenger of Allah! Guide me to such an action, that when I do it, Allah will love me and the people will love me.  He said, be detached from this world and then Allah will love you and do not be attracted to what people have and then the people will love you''.

related by  Hasan, ibn Majah kitab az-Zuhud  2/1373

This hadith shows that Allah loves those who live simply in this life.  It has been said that if having love for Allah is the best state to be in, then living simply is the best condition to be in.

Living simply means that you should restrain your desire for worldly things in the hope of receiving something better instead.  In order to achieve this more easily you should first realise that the things which people yearn for in this world are infact worthless when compared with what we hope for in the next world.

If we know that what Allah has will remain and that the life to come is better and more lasting, then we realise that this world is really like a piece of ice left out in the sun - it soon melts and vanishes . The akhirah  (after life),  however, essentially never vanishes. The desire one has to exchange this life for the one to come is strengthened by the certainty  that there is no comparison between this life and the next.

Sayyiduna Jabir رضي الله عنه narrates that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"I fear most for my Ummah that they follow the dictates of their nafs and that they entertain lengthy hopes. The desires of the nafs prevents one from the truth and lengthy hopes make one forget about the Aakhirah. This world is travelling and leaving while the Aakhirah is travelling and approaching. Each has its sons, so if you can avoid being a son of this world then do so. Today you are in a place of deeds [this world] where there is no reckoning and tomorrow you will be in the Aakhirah where there are no deeds [only reckoning]." (Mishkat)
