A Brilliant Stratagem
Al-A'mash رحمه الله was not on favourable terms with Imam Abu Hanifa رحمه الله. One day, he issued a conditional divorce to his wife with the words: "If you inform me that the flour in our home has been depleted, by a verbak declaration, writing a message to me, conveying a message via a third person or making any such indications, then you are divorced from me."
His wife was stunned and sought a solution to save her marriage. People advised her to request Imam Abu Hanifa رحمه الله for an answer. She proceeded and explained to him what had happened.
He explained, "The solution is simple. Tie the empty bag of flour to his trousers or any other portion of his clothing which is convenient for you when he goes to bed at night. When he wakes up from his bed, he will realise that the bag of flour is empty."
She did as he had advised. When al-A'mash awoke, he realised that his trousers were tied to the empty bag of flour.
He was obliged to submit, "By Allaah! This is surely a stratagem of Abu Hanifa! How can we ever be successful in our plots while he is amongst us? He humiliates us before our wives by exposing our weaknesses to them."
