The Lofty Status Of The Illustrious Sahaba (May Allaah Be Pleased With Them All)

10th July 2012
The Saheehayn contain a hadeeth reported by Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri رضي الله عنه that something happened between Khalid Ibn al-Waleed رضي الله عنه and 'Abdur Rahman Ibn 'Awf رضي الله عنه, whereupon the former said some words to the latter. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took exception to it and said, "Do not abuse any of my Companions. Were any one of you to spend heaps of gold equivalent to Mount Uhud, you would not attain even the virtue of a mudd or half thereof of one of them." [al-Bukhari, Fada'il as-Sahaaba, 3673; Muslim, Fada'il as-Sahaaba, 2541; Abu Dawood, as-Sunna, 4658; at-Tirmidhi, al-Manaqib, 3860; Ahmad, 3:11, 54]

By his Companions رضي الله عنهم the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم meant 'Abdur Rahman رضي الله عنه and others like him who had embraced Islaam in the early years before Makkah was captured and who had fought for Islaam. They were the people who swore their fealty to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم under the tree. They were better and more honoured than those who entered into the faith afterwards, that it, after the Treaty of Hudaybiyya, which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم concluded with the Makkans. Khalid Ibn al-Waleed رضي الله عنه embraced Islaam along with others in this later period. To be sure, they were better than those who embraced Islaam after Makkah was conquered and those are known as tulaqa, that it, those who were forgiven and set free. This group included Abu Sufyan and his sons, Yazeed and Mu'awiyah رضي الله عنهم.

The burden of this hadeeth is that those who joined the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم company later should not speak ill of those who had joined his company earlier since they had honour no other Companions رضي الله عنهم had and could not have, even if they spent fold equal to Mount Uhud. If this is about those who embraced Islaam after the Treaty of Hudaybiyya and before the Conquest of Makkah, what of those who never joined the Prophet's company? May Allaah سبحانه و تعالى be pleased with all of the Companions!!
