“Rābi‘ah Baṣriyah rahmatullahi alayh used to say that people think that a friend of Allāh ta’ala is one who can fly in the sky, walk on water or perform other supernatural feats.

Birds fly in the air, fish swim in the water, yet that does not make them of an exceptional status or beloved to Allāh ta’ala!

In reality, one attains the special friendship of Allāh ta’ala by practising Dīn in its entirety.”
