The noble mystics have said, that anything which makes man heedles to Allah is his idol. And, when man is overcome by its love and takes the initiative and disobeys Allah, then this is its worship. (Ma'ariful Qur'an, Volume 5, page 278)

As Shaykh Abdullah al-Faisal says, even the athiest worships an idol: his evil and corrupted desires.
