You can do Masah on socks ( Jawrab ) that prevent the skin from being visible and that don't slip off when you walk, so as to reveal the foot. This is the dominant Hanafi classical opinion.
For proof see : Fathul Qadeer, Al Bayaanah, Fatawaa Alamgiree, Al Jawharatu Nayyirah, Al Hidaya itself without sharh, Quduri without sharh.
This condition of socks being waterproof and the ability to walk in them for 3 miles is a very, very weak position in the Hanafi Madhab.
And as far as the narrations being weak regarding Jawrab, then Imam Ayni in Al Bayaana, destroys this criticism. In addition to this; reports of at least 10 Sahabah have reached the Fuqaha, in which they wiped over Jawrab. No Sahabi is reported to have objected. Al Mundhiri says that the silence of the Sahabah is then Ijma'a for Masah ala al Jawrabain. It is for these reasons that Imam Abu Hanifa retracted from his origional position and permitted Masah on Jawrabain. Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad were already of this opinion, so that makes it the dominant opinion of the Hanafi Madhab.
Allah knows best.

Salaam,
I am not a scholar, therefore i do not wish to debate on the matter. However, it should be realised that no one amongst the A'immah and Mujtahideen have regarded it permissible to do masah on the type of wollen, cotton and nylon socks that are available today.
All fuqaha unanimously agree that masah on thin socks through which water can be strained, need to be tied to stay erect and cannot be used to walk a mile or two is not permissible and neither is masah on shoes permissible. And because the socks we have today are thin and they do not pass the 3 conditions stated, hence masah on them is not permissible under any condition. The person who does masah on them, then according to Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Shafi’i, Imam Malik and Imam Ahmed, in fact according to any mujtahid, the wudhu of such a person will be invalid.
And this is not a matter we should take lightly. We should not shop for a fatwa here. If the wudu is invalid the salaah is invalid. And, as is mentioned in a hadith, the first thing Allaah azza wa jal will look at on the day of qiyaamah will be a persons salaah. If it is found to be incomplete, then the person will be unfortunate and a loser!
Even if there was a genuine difference of opinion, insha Allaah i would still refrain from making masah on any type of sock, except of course the khuffain. "Better to be safe than sorry."

Assalamu alaikum,
I have listed below the main sources of Hanafi Fiqh and their statements:
“ It is not permissible to perform masah on Jawrabain according to Imam Abu Hanifa ( Ra ), unless they are Mujalladain ( top and bottom are leather) or Munalain ( just the sole is leather). And they ( Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad ) said it is permissible if they are Thakheenain ( thick enough to stay on the foot, so you can walk without them slipping off and exposing the foot) and cover the foot so it is not visible ( Laa Yashiffaan). Because of what has been transmitted from The Messenger of Allah ( Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam), that He ( SAW) wiped over the Jawrab. And this ( permissibility) is because it is possible to walk in them if they are Thakheen and that is: that they stay upon the shin ( and foot ) without the need to be tied for support, so they resemble the Khuff. And Abu Hanifa said this would still not come under the meaning of Khuff because you are unable to perform continuous walking in them unless they have leather underneath. And it is recorded from Abu Hanifa that he retracted from this position and adopted their ( Abu Yusuf and Muhammad’s) opinion. And upon this is ( the Hanafi Schools) Fatwaa. ( Al Hidaaya )
“ And Thakheen is that which is not Mujallad or Mun’al ( non-leather), with the condition that it stays on the shin itself without needing to be tied, and that nothing underneath it is visible. And upon this is the Fatwaa, as stated in ‘ Annahrul Faaiq’.” ( Fataawa Aalamgiree)
“ And Imam Abu Hanifa adopted their opinion and upon this is the Fatwaa” ( Fathul Qadeer)
So Brother I could continue Insha Allah, within the Hanafi school and the other Madhahib to show that there is no Ijma’a whatsoever, but it would make this article unnecessarily lengthy.
My point is this :
1. I am Hanafi and I do Masah on todays socks because I don’t need anything to hold them in place on my foot, and my feet are not visible in them. I can walk in them. So this permissibility is the strongest position in my Madhab and I follow it. It is not a doubtful or weak position at all, as a matter of fact it is the Fatwaa of the school. And I certainly am not shopping around for a Fatwa. Unless you can provide counterproof from your madhab then then please do so. Otherwise remove the articles and videos from this site because they are one sided.
2. Please stop mentioning Ijma’a again and again on the issue, because someone will come down heavy on you with devastating proofs on the contrary.
